Zenfolio and Fine art prints? - 04-18-2007, 11:42 AM

I'm want to start getting exposer to some of my work as fine art prints. I think that Zenfolio has a nicer look than other picture sites. I have not the time or the desire to do my own website.

But I'm looking at a place where I can direct people to as a starting point for picking an image to be printed by me to my standards.

I've been telling myself this is something I want to do as well, but haven't actually put the effort into it yet.

I took a look at their 7-day trial shortly after they launched a while back. My main complaints were the small thumnails, the fact that you had to click a popup to get the original sized imaged, and a lack of layout customization compared to PBase. Just took another quick look and it doesn't seem that much has changed. Also looking at their feature list I don't think the shopping cart/print-sales features is meant to be use for self-fulfilled orders; it looks like you have to choose one of their two affiliated labs for print fulfillment. Performance also seemed pretty slow (at least just now).

Photoshelter looks like more what I would have in mind. They seem to offer a more complete solution, and with a lot of flexibility. The big downside is that it's much more expensive.

Photoshelter does look interesting.

I use Zenfolio and really like it. The things I like about it are

1. I can upload any size photo/file type be it TIFF or JPEG. It can also be ProPhotoRGB, AdobeRGB or SRGB and it still displays correctly.

2. I can download the origional from any location if I want.

3. You can display in a slide show that is full screen which is nice if you are showing people.

4. You can get prints to MPIX directly from their site.

There are some things I wish they would do different like let me mark up prints instead of giving MPIX pricing as well as allow users to add comments if I wanted but otherwise I like it.

Zenfolio has it's problems, just like other sites, but I like its layout and I like that I can use mpix to print my photos. I tend to use the shopping cart for the church events I shoot, though, since I wouldn't dream of doing a mark up for those.
