Another price ? product shot! - 04-19-2007, 04:43 PM

I have a person who is a nurse and has developed a medical product, its small and clear rubber and looks like a suction cup with holes in it! Anyway, he has had a lot of interest in it and has done a few talks about it around the USA. He gave me a prototype and wants me to photo it for his website and maybe product lable. Its going to be hard to get a good shot of this I believe because of its size and shape, not to mention being clear rubber. My question is this, How do you price this? Do I get a fee just for the web image and then maybe some limited lisence fee depending on how many lables it may go on ? What type of lisence would be my best protection to give on something like this? What if it takes off and he sells millions of them, do I get residual fees ? How do I begin to price this, I have no clue? I think I would like to get a up front fee for Photo & PP time, this I think I can figure out. Its the lisence and residual stuff I am worried about. I will post a few shots after I take some for your input. Thanks, I sure could use some advice on this..

This is the hardest of the questions about commercial photography.
Many people charge a set fee for their time and effort, and then charge a one time fee for usage. Many also charge for each usage individually.

Chris,

Just make sure you factor two shoots into your time unless your client knows exactly what he/she wants. It will take longer than you think. The last week has been a great learning experience for me as I worked on my first real product shoot.

Get a light tent/cube to control hot spots on your clear item. Best of luck with your project.
