Question Help with business card? - 04-24-2007, 10:04 PM

I am supposed to turn in a business card with my portfolio tomorrow. My friend's fiance has his own graphic design company and because I have taken many pictures of them, I had asked if he could make me a business card to turn in. My teacher said we could do that, I do not have to make it. he actually recommended having someone else do it, or exchanging photos for the card or whatever. Well he didn't get around to doing it and all the ones I have turned in my teacher didn't like. He wants something simple, but not too plain. So it is very confusing.

This is the closest I go to something he liked. He said it was the best I had but needed a different logo in the corner, but I didn't really like it too much. Also I had the logo black, but I changed it while editing out my number and stuff.

I would suggest putting some of your work on there if you can. The card is an advertisement for you, and it tells me nothing about what type of photography you do really. There are tons of posts around where you can see examples of peoples cards, to give you an idea what others do.

So you go to TTU? I did photocommunications at TTU and left about 3 years ago. Is tony gleason still around?

My teacher said not to put photos on the cards.

Yes I am photocomm @ TTU. I don't know who that is, so I guess not. They are having a hard time getting and keeping teachers for photo. They are now only wanting to hire people with PHDs. The teacher I have I think has been here for about 5 years though.

Yeah, he was a visiting professor from southern california, a pretty accomplished artist he rocked. They have always struggled with the photocomm program there, but I loved it - its hard to find a uni program that has a photo emphasis in the journalism school, so I really liked it. But, I would recommend taking alot of electives from the art department.

Who's your professor? I think if he said not to put photos on there it looks fine as long as you think that represents you as an artist.

Well I think I am just going to use one of the free templates online at Avery.com cuz my mom got me some business card paper by them so I can print out cards at home, and it only works with their templates. I will use that for my class. Though I still need to make one for business sometime. Along with working on my webpage which I don't know anything about either...lol

Well I am graduating in December (which will be 3 and 1/2 in college for me). I have only had regular art classes, no photo art classes. And I don't have time for any more electives as I am trying to squeeze in a couple business classes also. My prof for most of my photo classes is Gary Miller.

Kalee,

Do it yourself. You'll never learn anything if you always have others doing tasks for you. And please have your 'real' business cards printed by a professional business card printer. Those ones that people print at home are very obviously done so and are just unprofessional.

You can download a business card template in PhotoShop format from VistaPrint.com. Then you can do all the editing in PS to your liking. If you're going to be a photographer, you're going to be spending a lot of time in PS. That's just a fact and the sooner you get good at it, the better.

Good luck!

- Wil

Is this an assignment then? If it were me and this was an assignment, I would print these out for the assignment, but woulds eriously consider designing one that shows your work. The easiest way to get people interested is for them to see your work.

I agree with looking around (you can do a search here, too!) at what others have come up with. Once you figure out what you want, it's not that difficult to design :)

Good luck!

When I actually start working as a photographer I will have business card printed professionally. This is just to turn in with my portfolio. I don't actually get paid to photograph yet.

It is not that I can't use photoshop. It is just that I have spent hours trying to come up with a design. I have made some cards in photoshop, but my teacher didn't like them. The card above he said I could use, but with something less busy in the top left, and I couldn't come up with anything, so I just used an online template.

I have looked up business cards on here and found a few. I think a lot of the threads the pictures have been taking out of. But I just don't know that I have any pictures good enough to put on a card yet. Or where to put the picture and the words and all that.

Unfortunately I am not a very creative person when it comes to coming up with ideas for stuff like that. I know not good for a photographer....which is why I am always thinking this was probably not the best major choice.

Kalee - I know Gary pretty well, his first semester teaching was my first semester in the program. He is a great teacher with a good design sense - I would ask him why he doesn't want you to put photos on the card. Also, I would get more specific feedback from him. If you are only using this card for your assignment, its fine. But, it doesn't sound like you are very happy with it. Maybe ask Gary for some examples of what he has in mind for a good card.

Also remember, you dont have to be a good graphic designer to be a good photographer! Don't let a business card discourage you, I'm horrible as designing them also (I just married a graphic desinger...very convenient!) :)

So I am still trying to work on a card for business. Not for class anymore. And someone told me maybe this picture cropped like this would work. But I dunno, my e-mail wont fit on the tree trunk and my website won't either. So I dunno. I just don't think I have any good photos for a business card

We put photos on the back of ours, and the text on the front. That way, the two don't have to compete for space. So many business cards are two sided, people always look at both sides. I also make a point when handing them out to pass them with the photo side up.
