I need to start putting together a print portfolio of 8x10s, and I'm open to suggestions as to the best way to go about it so that potential clients will find it very attractive.

First off, why 8x10? As a photographer your work will show better in a larger format. My book is 11x14 and IMHO, has much more impact than the smaller 8x10 size.

As far as what images, I've said it before; this is your calling card and MUST be presented thoughtfully to land you the job. Your opening image should be the best or near the best in the book. The images must flow together well and be arranged so that portraits face inwards and you shouldn't mix landscape and portrait orientations on facing pages.

The book itself should also be of good quality. I prefer books by:

House of Portfolios
Brewer Cantelmo

They aren't cheap, but will last quite a long time if cared for properly. My 11x14 book from House of Portfolios is going on three years and is in excellent shape.

Good luck!

I guess looking from a consumer pov, 8x10 seems fairly big but not too big. But I see your point about 11x14 and will go with that. I haven't been printing images for very long so I'll take your word for it. :-)

For the book, I'll take a close look at your recommendations.

Thanks for the feedback, Scott, especially since you've probably answered this same question many times.

I always have my iPod on me with my images set to a slide show with music. Addiitonally I have four weddings on my iPod as well. While this may not be optimum for a consultation, I think as a professional you should always have samples on you, and this is just the easiest way for me.

I can't wait for the iPhone to come out so I have one less thing to carry.

Aric,

This is a great idea. Even though it probably does not have the effect a big slide show might it would make a great tool for impromptu showings.

Scott,

Thanks for your input. I was in the middle of getting images printed for a portfolio and your input helped me out a great deal. 11x14 it is. I am also going to look at one of the companies you suggested for the books. Thanks again.

John,

Thanks for asking this question.

I am so thankful for the people here on this site and their willingness to share hard earned information.
