Getting started in Dallas - 05-21-2007, 09:47 AM

I'm kinda new to the forums so go easy on me. lol I've played around with photography for several years as a hobby, and I'm looking to get more involved with paid engagements. I currently have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi and a couple of decent lenses. Does anyone have any recommendations for getting into the business? I currently have a full time job as an IT consultant that I plan on keeping, but I would like to have a little weekend work on the side. Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

What is it with IT people and photography?? Just joking, you did say go easy on you. I would suggest that you attach yourself to a working photographer and absorb everything they can teach you. The photography is only about 20% of a photography business and there are no schools that teach the other 80%. You can learn through trial and error or you can learn from someone that already made the errors. There is no rule that says you have to make every mistake for yourself.

Ditto to Don - and internships are a great way to get experience, while soaking up orbs of info.

If you take a look around and keep track of the posts in business and weddings you'll find where some photographers seek out some assistance at times. Good place to learn some things based upon feedback from others that have tagged along.

Thanks for the great info guys! I'll keep looking around in the forums for anyone that is looking for an assistant. Like I said, I'm trying to get my feet wet and I would love improve my skills and get more into the business. Thanks again for everything, and I'm always open to suggestions.
