I"m confused. I have a a sales tax ID number. Every quarter I go online and submit my $0.00 form however... I just opened a notice that says the estimated amount due is 925.30 and the regular penalty is 92.60 for the period covered by 1/107 - 3/1/07. They want me to pay them for estimated income? I haven't had any income and furthermore I filed their stupid report back when I was supposed to. I don't get it

I would call the comptroller's office on Monday to get that straightened out. If you've had no sales, you shouldn't owe them anything.

There is also information about an amnesty period starting in June, which may be because of some larger glitch in their system...information is available at the controller's website...

Something is definitely wrong in their system. I thought that they were getting me because I hadn't filed the 2nd quarter yet. I filed the 1st quarter electronically back when I was supposed to. I just filed the 2nd quarter and there is no reference number or anything that gives me a way to prove that I filed.
It was nice of them to assume that I had some business but I'm not to that point yet. I kind of wish that I hadn't gotten my id number now...

I forgot to file once and I got a estimated bill, I called and told them I had collected no sales tax. They made a note, and I filled out the form and mailed it in. That was the end of that, I didnt have to pay. Give them a call, you should not have any problems.
Good luck,

The tax office assured me that their computers estimates are infallible - 'you cannot overpay on taxes - the system wont let you.' We file quarterly - the tax office goofed up (received but didnt record 2 out of 4 payments within the last 24 months). We now call and confirm. They made us pay late fees once - for the aforementioned reason - even though my bank showed my check cashed on time. Go figure. Since then we have kept a close eye on them.

Michael... how much estimated income per year did you tell the comptroller you'd be having when you applied for the tax ID? I pay my taxes annually because I haven't hit the limit where quarterly filing is necessary (last year I only had about $6,000 sales and $525 tax due). It might be worth checking with the comptroller so you don't have to file quarterly with zero sales.

Michael,
They probably have a mix up and can get you fixed up pretty quick. One thing to think about: if you do start having to pay tax in the future, use the old fashioned way and write a check, copy all forms and CYA. I pay monthly Sales Tax and I take special care to double check figures and keep documentation for my figures and the report.
I have been through 2 sales tax audits and niether one was enjoyable.

CJ | Ummm... well... yes... there was a mix up but not on their end... I just called them. They were very easy to deal with. The report that I filed this weekend turned out to be the first quarter report (as someone noted above). The report that I filed earlier this year was the 4th quarter '06 report. Since I had filed this weekend I don't have to do anything else... except for having my head extracted from where it was lodged in time to file the 2nd quarter report

T. | I agree with the above. Why waste your time with filing quarterly if it is not necessary?

If your not making any sales that requires you to collect sales tax pushing you over the monthly or quarterly threshold, and you have a Tax ID number, then you only need report annually in January of each new year.

How does one do that (file once a year) when they require me to fill out a report quarterly?
Personally... I would just as soon have enough sales to warrant filing regularly rather than put a big round zero in all the blanks...

When I got my sales use tax number a few years back, in the application process, I was required to estimate my taxable sales. Based on that, when I was issued the number, I was notified I was under the threshold for monthly or quarterly filing and mailed the forms annually. Once you collect over each of the thresholds you must file at a more frequent interval
