We lean heavily on fine art. Artists background - and it turns out its easier to get hired with a camera than with a paint brush. So here I am!

I do alot of modeling portraits, some family and a few events. But I am really comfortable working with models.

I got started taking a B&W photography course, and ever since then, i caught the shutter bug.

I do a little of everything, but I'm big on shooting bands, either live or for their promos. I started out with a little digital camera I used to shoot with when my friends and I would go out, but one of my friends happened to be in a band and liked the shots I did of his band one night, so after that I decided to take a step up and my husband got me a bigger camera to handle the shots better. Turns out it worked, and I take it everywhere to shoot live bands. I then introduce myself to them after their set and give them my business card so they can navigate to my site and check out their photos. A lot of them like my work and end up asking me to come to more of their shows and do their promo shots. They add me to their site (which is myspace, but a great marketing tool) and when other people see my work, they contact me for other work.

babies, children all in black and white
i'd love to do fine art in that genre and produce a book someday, just not sure how that fits in the plan right now!

Portraiture and on occasions, weddings, if I can handle it. :)

Right now I am shooting "environmental portraits" of people for a national magazine. I really like having assignments and brain storming new ways to make the same type of shot look new and fresh.

Anyway...My main question is about "industry standards". I photograph for a real estate agent magazine and I asked if I could be included in the table of contents page where it lists who all the contributors for the magazine are. The productions director told me no that I couldn't be listed because it is against "industry standards". I dunno what exactly that means or where to go to find out what the standards are for the industry. I just know that I've seen this done before in other magazines, so why not the mag that I am photographing for?

Any help in the right direction to find out this info would be appreciated.

Thanks

~KJ

The publisher placed an ad on Craigslist and I responded, and "sold" myself and my work to the publisher and convinced the publisher that I was the one for the job at the interview. And once I got the job...I've been doing alot of self study and meeting other photographers to found out ways to improve my photography, and it has improved alot!

Thanks for sharing that Katie Jo, very cool to hear. I've been looking more and more at Craigslist as a viable place to both market and land new work.

In one year I'll be a combat photographer. And my employer has a few openings... two when I checked last, but that number might be down to zero by now.
