Question Multi-Day Commercial Event - how much? - 06-21-2007, 03:59 PM

So, as you may know, we shoot primarily portraits and weddings. Not too much commercial. I've been asked about covering a multi-day event at a college. They have numerous speakers and presentations over 3 days. How much should something like that be priced at? Any suggestions on price range would help. Images would then be used in college publications, online, and print. So how much for the whole deal is within the normal range? Not gouging and not giving it away.

Is this event photography with the client wanting usage of the images for general PR purposes, handout, in house publication, third party editorial limited to story generated by your client, annual report, etc etc..

If so...

How many hours a day?

How many images do you expect as final selects?

Deliverables.. CD, Proofs, Contact sheets? etc etc

License terms? Exclusive? Non-Exclusive? Length of Term? One year, two, five, perpetual?

It will be used in in-house publications. Coverage is scattered from 8am-5pm over 2.5 days. Final number of images - what's normal here? Its for lectures - so I would have thought 10 per speaker is enough. (Am I crazy? Too low? They stand at a podium the whole time) There are about 30-40 speakers at this thing. So total image count around 400. Contact sheets. Low Res web images. As for usage, one year is usual, but they like to get as much as they can.

Better idea, now?

I would classify it more as Public Relations Event Photography even though it might be for a corporate client. You know more about the needs of the client than we might. What's your feelings on it as far as pricing?

EDIT: My figure posted above is for a roving photographer capturing candids and some posed photos of participants at the event, including speakers at the podium, for the 2 1/2 day time frame.
