Any Food Photographers out there? - 07-20-2007, 07:42 PM

I really love snapping shots of food, and I think I am getting very good at it. I am just an amateur, but I would love to make a business out of it. Can anyone give me some tips and pointers?

Redmouse is a great food photographer so you might want to direct some questions to him :)

My degree, and early years in business, was commercial photography. Used to shoot a lot of food. I'm sure I could lend a hand if needed.

It's always cool to learn new stuff, but the shots you have now are pretty nice, too!

Tarick, I took a look at yout site and thought your images were great! Don't just think about doing food professionally, DO IT! You've got a great eye! I loved your use of light, angle and composition. Very creative. I will say that I loved how you used the selective depth of field, but there were a couple images that I wished had a little more. The nachos come to mind. I'm sure you understand that if the nachos are what your client were selling they'd likely want them sharp all the way through. The use of selective depth on the more artistic food shots is awesome, and even on shots like the hamberger... where the entire burger is sharp but the focus falls off forward and behind it is brilliant, because it brings our eyes right to the burger. And the burger... really does make me hungry!! Well done!

I'd start with putting together some catchy portfolio piece (doesn't look like it'd be a difficult thing for you to do as creative as you are), and hit a few ad agencies. Some of the serious commercial shooters here would probably be able to better advise you there. I think it all comes down to talent, creativity and persistence.

these are great ... i could learn a few things from you myself !!!

the only thing i would say is if you can add some shots with motion into your porftolio it would increase the appeal

i see some shots out there with milk being poured into a cereal bowl or with a margarita class being shaken so it is splashing everywhere ...

otherwise, this is really really good

One thing that I noticed is your meats looked a little dried out and some of the fruit did to. After you get done setting a food shot your not going to be able to eat it because of all the extras that are put on the food to make it look better than what it really does. the shots are done well. You might want to see if you can find a food stylist and have them prep a shot for you and then see the difference.

Take what you have and send it into the stock agencies. Food stock shots really sell well.

I worked with a girl that used to shoot food and it was something see. she had a kitchen in the studio and the stylist she used would make that food just pop. Even after it's been around for a few hours. mineral oil and a small paint brush will become your new best friends. that was one trick i picked up from the stylist. you can make anything look moist with a little mineral oil.

Hey thanks to all for the tips and comments. Yes, adam, I would like to find a stylist, but I am just an amateur (a poor one) and can't hire anyone right now! I have tried glycerin, and I didnt think of putting it on the meats. I agree with you, they do look a bit dried out.
