Pricing albums - 08-10-2007, 12:50 AM

Hello,

I'm just starting selling the leather craftsmen albums (flush mount)and I was wondering how to price them by themselves to the client.(I will design). How do you include them in a package? Same upcharge as if you were selling them individually?

Thanks,

Lets see - usually you price traditional albums at or higher than what you would pay if the prints were sold individually. eg. An 8x10 album with 40 sides should price at or higher than selling 40 8x10 prints. That might help you get a starting price. Then add in the design fee. In the end, you end up charging what people are willing to pay.

As for packages, those are usually used to up sell clients by offering items at a discount - or by offering items that are otherwise unavailable to them. If you cut the album price in a package, you want to make up for it with something else - like they buy more stuff. eg. You only offer this album in your 1st and 2nd tier packages - if they opt for the super basic cheap bottom-of-the-line package, the album is not included. Maybe that makes a little sense? I need some coffee!

I price mine by figuring the cost, plus number of pages times my hourly rate. You know, I have some templates in layered psd format that I would be willing to sell you for $50.00 that would save you hundreds of hours in page design. I used to spend 20-30 hours on one book, but since using these templates I spend less than 5 hours on an album. If you are interested send me a pm. I have 150 two page spreads that can be broken down into 300 single sides if needed. Hope that helps. :)

honestly, i charge what i feel my clients will pay.

i don't price it out as though i were selling forty 8x10 images, because i feel that by purchasing that many there should be a bulk discount in there somewhere. i have an assistant design the albums using album design software... so i figure in what i pay her (she is paid on a per-album basis), what i spend on hardware/software, and the cost of the albumn itself and the prints, plus assembly time... and make sure i am making plenty of profit to account for the time i spend coordinating the whole effort.
