Travel time question. - 10-16-2007, 11:23 PM

I am making a quote for a class reunion for next year. The class will be taking a dinner cruise out of Galveston for one day of the three day weekend. I live in the Cypress area and will take me about an hour to get from my side of town to Galveston. My question is, do I charge for the travel time it takes to me to get there?

Thanks

If you've already quoted a price, it would not be a good idea to add on extra for a mere hours drive.

If you are quoting a job price, include the extra time, but don't break it down as such.

When you break down the costs and give a list to the customer you are opening yourself up to the customer then wanting to negoitiate the cost of individual items. i.e. You should be able to get there in 45 mins instead of an hour. Can you use a cheaper camera ? What if we don't have the 200 people we expect, can we cut the cost ?

A techinician was called to the factory because the assembly line had shut itself down and was costing the company thousands each minute.
The tech came and looked at the machine and took out a screwdriver and tightened a screw. The machine came to life and all was well.
The bill was $1500. The company demanded an itemized invoice for the service because it was so "expensive". They got the itemized bill.
$.05 for tightening screw.
$1,499.95 for knowing which screw to tighten.

Just to keep it in perspective, you go round trip. I teach some banking topics and had a large organization that wanted me in California. It was a one hour session. While they'd cover travel, it is basically a day there and a day back. They didn't want to pay for travel time, so no-go.

My point is, think in terms of both ways as you'll be on the road for two hours.

The next question is, how valuable is your time, how much do you want the work, what are others doing in your market, etc. And I think you're getting some good advice here already.
