whats in a name? - 10-22-2007, 06:07 PM

We're getting ready to name our little business...

At issue is the words "photography" and "studios".

I am considering using <insertnamehere> "Photography and Studios", since we currently support both still and video work. (Truth is, we also do a little audio, too). Problem is, the website would have to be <insertnamehere>studios.com, since <insertnamehere>photography.com is taken by some off-shore website-for-sale outfit. Is the "Photography and" redundant? Should I just drop the "Photography and" from the name, or keep both and have the shorter website name?

Does the "Photography and" add that much value?

...decisions, decisions...

Well, if you have a physical studio you could drop the Photography and part.
But you also may get the Dance Studio confusion going.

I think you should use "photography" as well. It more specifically desribes what you do, where as just using "studio" is more vague and encompasses several different genres of art.

Studio:

1. the workroom or atelier of an artist, as a painter or sculptor.
2. a room or place for instruction or experimentation in one of the performing arts: a dance studio.
3. a room or set of rooms specially equipped for broadcasting radio or television programs, making phonograph records, filming motion pictures, etc.
4. all the buildings and adjacent land required or used by a company engaged in the production of motion pictures.
5. studio apartment.

Missed that studios was referring to video in the name. We had originally been Belle's Bridal and Family Photography. Its all in there, right? lol. Our clients shortened it to Belle's. That's how we got to where we are now. You can also list stuff as a sub-name under your main name - photography, videography, and what-have-you can go in there. It might open more name options for you.

I'm a little conflicted with using the word video when I do more on the tech/post-production-side than just videography, plus I don't see formats settling down for a while for me to invest further. I also have problems with some of the connotations there...video somehow being inferior to film, but perhaps that is just my bias. <<Please, Dont jump me if you are a videographer reading this>>

I was trying to get something a little snazzy with the <insertnamehere> part, and hopefully, if all works well, clients will shorten it as our business becomes famous like yours. For now, it looks more and more like "<insertnamehere> Photography and Studios". Just gotta nail down the <insertnamehere> part with the SOS.

I remember talking to Holly about using the word "studios" when we were putting things together... My concern was the same one that's been mentioned; I didn't want ballerinas calling for lessons. :o)

your website doesn't have to have "photograohy" or "studios in it.

mine doesn't.

i'm monkey tree photography. monkeytree.com was already taken, so i registered monkey-tree.com. i didn't want "photography" in my domain name because it's very easy to make a typo when trying to type it.

Since I do (some) video and (some) digital editing work as well, I went with "Imaging" since that encompases everything and is shorter than having several words.
