Houston Tax Advisor Recommendation? (Or advice on legally taking people's money?) ;) - 11-16-2007, 03:44 PM

I have several different shooting/selling opportunities coming up and would like to make sure I'm doing everything legally. I plan to at least start out as a sole propietorship under my own name (so no DBA) and know I need to get a sales tax ID, but I'm not sure about much beyond that as far as record keeping, how income tax plays into it, if using my current equipment will be a financial factor, etc. Just to give you an idea of the variety of things I'm looking at:

-Shooting family portraits for friends
-Shooting portraits for musicians (promo/album shots)
-Selling prints/products at what is essentially a local craft show
-Selling prints online and/or through consignment
-Shooting once a week for a friend's ebay-type business
-Shooting for a local recording studio in exchange for recording time

So I figure I should talk to a tax advisor about what paperwork I need to have in place, how to charge sales tax appropriately in each of these situations, how to keep records and how to file taxes. Unless, of course, an accountant would be the more appropriate person to talk to? Any recommendations in the Houston/Clear Lake area for a tax advisor or accountant? (Tried several searches on the forum already, but didn't come up with anything.)

Thanks!
Ashley

The comptroller is very helpful when it comes to telling you what money is due to them. Photography is kind of weird - in terms of what is taxed and when. Call and ask what ever you need to know.

Of course, that makes sense that they would want to help figure out what money you owe them. ; ) You're right - I finally went into the office yesterday and got the sales tax ID... maybe this whole business thing isn't so hard after all! lol! Thanks for the reply!!
