Help Pricing Photo Usage - 11-29-2007, 02:06 PM

Can someone please help me estimate the use of a photo in a book.

I recieved the following request from an Author wanting to use the attached image
I sent a reply requesting the size, format and etc that he requires.

The photo was taken from the Paria Movie Set in Utah.

Quote:
Dear Mr Holden

I'm currently researching a book on Clint Eastwood's westerns.

In a chapter devoted to The Outlaw Josey Wales I will be discussing the use of the Pariah location.
Whilst I appreciate the current buildings did not feature in the film, I thought it would be nice to include your shot of the sign that describes the history of the site as used in films.

All photographers who are assisting me with the project will be credited on a page devoted to them and any contact, links, etc, will be included to help promote their work.

I would like to include your photograph, and would like to know what fee you charge.

The book is being published in the US only and will probably be sold mail order only.
The print run is anticipated to be between 1000-3000.

Here is the first thing that came to mind.

It can be helpful, but I don't consider it a final authority.

I don't know man, that's a pretty small run and probably not a very significant pic in relationship to the other pics in a Clint Eastwood bio. While it's not based on any real science, I'd be happy with $250-400. By the way, it will have ZERO promotional value to you.

I would copy the page from the pricing guide, and quote them the average price. It will lend credibility to your quote. My guess is that he won't want to pay much since he made a big point of the credits, etc.

I would not charge money for this usage fee, but would ask for something in exchange, mostly because the usage fee is going to be very small given the scope of the project. Perhaps a couple of copies of the book and permission to use the pages with your image for promotional purposes, or something that the author can do for you. I have found that bartering can be more fun than cash when the amounts are small.

I must respectfully disagree with Paco on this one.
A couple of books, or tear sheets, etc. don't pay the rent.
I'm with the author in this video about getting paid for your work.

Thanks for all the advice and help.

I generally do not get many individual offers for stock photographs as I sell most of my images through stock agencies.

The Author requested 2 images total, he wants another image showing one of the western buildings in the town also.

I typed up an agreement with:

Pricing below the low market estimate
Requested credits within the book as he outlined.
Request copy of the published book
Photographer rights to use published pages for electronic or printed advertisement

Quote:
Edit:

I went to another Stock Photo website and found an image of the same area.
The price estimate for the outlined use was $240. per image

I requested $125 per image in addition to the terms above
I will let you know if he agrees to these terms.

Sounds like you've got it under control.
What we think about pricing is really just a guess of what the market
value is to the buyer and the seller.
