I didn't really know how to word the subject of this thread, but here's the deal:
Before I learned better and wasn't getting paid up front for my weddings, I used to get my deposit/retainer and then get the balance the day of the wedding or after. WEll I have two albums in my possession where payment was never completed - got my deposit, but never got the balance - one wedding is from a year ago and the other is almost two years ago. Don't ask me why I did the albums (probably becauise I thought I was gonna get paid ), but the question:

What to do with the albums now? I can't really use them as samples because I don't do that type of album anymore. I don't really want to contact the couple and give them the album knowing I'll never see the balance, but I don't really want the stuff on my shelves anymore.....suggestions?????

Write it off as a loss. If years have passed, you are never gonna see another nickel. Since you can't use them as samples, there is only one option I see. Especially if you do not want to contact them.

You can contact the client one last time and right now before Christmas isn't the best time. Usually just after tax time when people have some extra money is best. Offer a discount for the album. You really just want to make something off the album right now. Make sure they understand that you are going to destroy the album if they do not purchase. If they don't bite then it's a loss and take it off your taxes next year.

It's a win win for both both parties. The client gets the book for less then they thought and you at least cover the album and possibly make a little something in turn.

I would contact them and give them a deadline on when to pickup up the album...or it is going to be destroyed. If faced with the fact they lose the deposit and the album is going to be destroyed, they will most likely try to work something out.

Offer a three payment options or something. Get something for it, if you can, but DO NOT give it away.

Definitely contact them thou...you never know why they didn't pick it up. I had a bride get pregnant right after the wedding and with a new little girl and all, she just forgot!
