Billboard Pricing - 01-12-2008, 07:18 PM

Okay this is the first time I have had a request to have a photo used on a billboard. How much is that worth for a one month run on a regular size billboard? Any ideas? I don't have a pricing calculator or even know where to find one, so any help would be great!!!

Jason - hey, first off congratulations on the request - that's impressive and too cool. Good luck with closing the deal. Keep us updated.

You might try calling some of the photo processing folks in town. I am sure they have experience sizing the photos in prep and perhaps know some of the details you need to be aware of as 'your' responsibility. I am a novice at this type of pricing, so take my info with a grain of salt, but perhaps something will make sense.

I sold a photo to a publishing company for a textbook and got my pricing here (below), based on the terms of use publisher quoted to me.

http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

advertising - for billboard, the choices seem funny, but after putting in some random number it gave me a message to put big size and qty 200 whatever that means..... anyway see results below

http://photographersindex.com/price-calc.dbm- this number is for 1 year contract, so I SUPPOSE you would just factor in only one month - not sure if that would be accurate, but read some of the term issues....

Type of Use:: Advertising
Specific Use:: Billboard
Press Run:: Over 100
Size:: Full page or Major Illustratio
Low Price:: $2,100.00
Average Price:: $3,550.00
High Price:: $5,000.00
Survey = 123

One Year Use, Reduce prices for 6 month use.

Susan

One month, one location....

I'd start at $1000 and go from there.

A one month run on a billboard? unless its a very special promotion I dont know many owners who would lease for less than 6-9 months... and even for that short term, the signs can be mucho expensive to manufacture.

Like anything else, first ask their budget, or determine if it's a small shop or not. Ask about timeof day traffic flow patterns (like red, yellow green, white). Ask the size of the board, and if its a dual standard size or half of a jumbo, figure out if you're getting the road side half or not, and if you're getting the oncoming traffic side or not, and whether or not its lit (for signage, these are the "circulation" type questions). I guess also ask how much of your photo will be on there (small, big, whole thing). A sign on the oncoming traffic in the gridlock part of Houston is valued at MUCH more than a sign on the backroads of an FM street (where I own/rent my signs), resulting in much higher yield, therefore rent, therefore budget, therefore money for you. Signs can rent anywhere between $500-$8000 a month in Houston so it wouldn't be unreasonable to ask for $1000 for a medium size medium flow traffic on a 2 year run lease.

As for shot quality, I think they only want like 25-75 DPI... I cant remember.

And for those who care, I have a 40x30ft I put up whenenver I have an unrented billboard... resulted in like one $75 photo shoot. Poo on traditional advertisement!

Jason, is this one of those new electronic billboards or hardcopy original? They change the electronic ones much more often. Sorry but no idea on pricing.

I would assume it is just a regular billboard. It's for one of the Christian high schools that we cover. I'm guessing billboard folks may let them go at different lengths as there was a school down here in Houston that had a billboard after a state championship, but it ran for just a month I believe.

jason- here are some additional informationfor future negotiation. depending on how much of the image will apprear on the billboard. the price increase incrementally from upto 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and fullboard (ie. for one month usage out door: 1/8 $1,000; 1/4 $1,200; 1/2 $1,400; full size $1,800.) this is pretty much industry standard.
