"Antique" photos opportunity - 01-14-2008, 01:34 PM

My daughter in law informed me last evening that our church (Mesquite/Sunnyvale area) is going to have the annual summer party/picnic at the church this year instead of at the local dude ranch. As such, they're looking for a on site photographer that can do "antique photos", that is... dress em up in vintage clothes with backgrounds, take their picture, and deliver prints. Pricing? I have no clue and don't plan to ask... not my deal. Other photo opportunities within the same party/picnic? Possibly... I just don't have any real information on exactly what they want to do other than as outlined already.
I'll be glad to pass on any names and links of people that are interested if you do this type of photography as long as you understand that my only duty in this is as middleman, ie: offer the opportunity to a bunch of great local photographers, pass on the links and phone numbers, and then let you guys negotiate with the parties in charge on your own. Otherwise, I'll probably just be one of the onlookers out there snickering at someone in the funny hat and old clothes.
Thanks for reading...

i'm not sure whether this is a very common type of photography ... when you mention "antique" and "vintage" clothes, that may not bring to mind an exact style ...

if you have any sample photos from somewhere to post that would be a good starting point

hopefully you will find someone willing to help out your church!

There is a studio in Gruene, Texas set up to do this kind of thing. GOOGLE photo studios in Gruene or New Braunfels. They have a web site.

Found it:

Finding the clothing is going to be the biggest stumbling block I would think. My 100 year old 7 7/8" lens would be perfect for capturing the images.

Bobby and Wayne, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, they didn't give me much info to go on so the vintage clothes thing may be over the top but was the first image that came to mind. For all I know, it may be closer to one of those state fair type deals where you stick your face through a hole in a painted people cutout and take a typical cheesy vacation phot type deal.
I'll see if I can get more info and post back... the event isn't until March 22 so they have a little bit of time at least to find someone. Of course, no one even mentioned finding a photographer until late this weekend and that does NOT help.
Thanks again...

This is the answer I got today after I questioned what their intent was...

"We want simple. Kind of a little house on the praire type. For example, little boys in overalls, no socks or shoes, with props such as baseball glove and ball. Little girls with prairie type dresses with rag doll, flowers, etc. Nothing too elaborate. We want to make it easy for them to change and get in and out so that everyone who wants to has a chance to participate."

Not much help but more than we had to go on before...

There are places that do this, souvenir photos of you and whoever dressed up in period clothing. the secret though is that they usually either have a fixed location or they have a trailer to haul all the costumes and sets and props etc. I believe there is a studio like this in the Ft Worth Stockyards near the information center. I would bet that the dude ranch where this church has gone before, had all of this set up regularly so no biggie.
My wife used to make 1800's period clothing and from what I have seen, it is not cost effective to transport and set up this kind of thing for what they are probably expecting it to cost.
Good Luck!

Just a thank you to the folks that read and/or responded to this thread.

As more information trickled out, I found that the event was only scheduled for three hours at best and they had already received two bids for the work at $1500 and $1800 for those three hours. I asked why I wasn't told that originally and received no real answer so I just told them to handle it on their own...

Anyway, thanks again.
