What's your overhead and cost of doing business? Is it a chain business or one man show. How many hits the website get? How many fliers and what kind of "propaganda"? What's a salon event? Are they actual advertising pics or snapshots from an event?

This is a facility and Bar for Cocktail receptions, sit down dinners, fashion shows, corporate events, weddings, private parties, Business Meetings. etc, accommodating up to 355 guests, I have no idea about the hits, but is a busy place, they want to advertise the facility for all the events mention above, modify their web site with new pictures, and paper fliers, business cards, no idea how many, so the Q's: how much should I charge for a set of pictures 20 - 30?

So are you photographing an event and granting them usage or actually producing advertising shots? I didn't grasp that part from your answer.

That's a tough one b/c I can go snap 30 pics of a party in about 20 minutes. Or are you expected to attend several events?

If I could do the job in one night, say 2 hours...I'd shoot a bunch of pics and grant them unlimited usage for $500-700. I doubt you'd get anymore before they hired a student and these aren't really style specific advertising photos.

charge a creative fee, then a usage fee.

for the first, figure out what your hourly rate needs to be and how long it will take.

for the second, you need to know what the "reach" of the image will be. how much marketing value does it have? pretty difficult to nail to an exact percentage, but that's where your sales skills come in.

good luck!

Depends on how you business is structured.

Do you sell Prints, Photos or a Photography Service.

Depending on what business model you use the price will vary.
  • Selling Prints for viewing, not for reproduction.
  • Selling photos is how most professionals work, in that you sell rights to each photo for a specific use the price of which is usually related to the estimated number of impressions the photo will make. Usually there is a fee charged to go out and shoot as well since they may not use any of your photos and you have expenses to cover.
  • Selling a Photography service where you charge a fee to shoot the photos and usually sign over the rights to the photos to let the client do as they please.

If there are recognizable people in the photos you better get releases from every one of them. This can be done via several methods. Explain to the client that you can't just photograph people in their club and then use them for advertising.
It sounds like both the client and the photographer are in need of some sound business practice help here.
