Selling Senior Digital Images - 03-25-2008, 08:19 PM

A senior wants to put his images online and Mom wants to buy a cd with some of his images. Mom already purchased quite a bit. What do you do, and how much per image or all images?

Thanks,
Joyce

I price my sessions to include a CD. Its what people want nowadays, why send them to a fly-by-night shoot and burn guy? Give them a real session with good photography and let them use it online.

Oh.. and make sure the "online" versions you give them have your logo and/or website on them and ask them to please keep those watermarks on the images... that way everyone they show it to is a new potential customer.

I'm offering a "3 pack" (meaning pick any 3) of low res digital images for uploading and emailing. This may change as I am just getting my feet in the water but for now I want them to buy prints and show all their myspace friends!
I've been told that once you get the popular ones into your studio the rest will follow. I would say giving them a digital would probably get you another sale!

For now, I still like the idea of keeping session reasonable and selling portraits to make the money. I would like my images posted but I have no idea how to price the CD being they paid a sitting and have already purchased photos. I take it just a minimual charge for the 3 image low resolution CD.

I Charge just $15 for the 3 low res. LOL I feel like I should put a disclaimer.... I have not sold any of these yet. I just set up my website and my prices and I have sold myself cheap, I am still very new at this and just moved to a new town in a new state so I really have yet to begin. Just wanted to share my thoughts on your question.

I would totally let him put the images online, especially if he is going to use it for his Myspace or Facebook. I always like to add my senior clients as friends and then when I get their pictures processed from their session, I put a nice boarder and my logo on a few of my favs and post them as a comment on their page. Then thats when the magic happens, because they always put the pictures in their photo section and send out bulletins to reach all their friends to look at their cool new pics and to go comment on them. Which is exactly what they do. It is such an amazing way to get your work seen and its totally free! I can't even begin to tell you how many of my clients have come from Myspace or Facebook

If you don't do myspace or facebook, then just send it through email, because 9 out of 10 thats where they are going to end up

Ditto! I've even booked a wedding due to posting an engagement session photo into a client's comments on myspace. A friend of hers saw it, liked it, requested me as a friend, then booked me!

So, I can just email him a few images and let him do the rest. I am new to digital. Should they be low resolution? Dumb question. How do I convert raw into low resolution? Should I change pixels to 200 when converting or is that resizing in PSP.

I have tried putting my studio name on a low resolution image and it it comes out distorted. Is there a way of making it legable?

^^I websize the images, and then stamp my logo on it. I made the logo into a brush and it doesn't seem to distort at all:

Do you use PSP or PS? I will have to figure out how to make my logo into a brush. I did finally copy it from a high res image and paste it as a new selection and it worked.
Thank you,
Joyce

I don't offer CD's on my price list anymore. I will sell it for a ridicuously high price (by photo) since you cannot control what they do with your work afterwards. If they want to have permission to scan them, I ensure the release doesn't allow it.

This is my take,
Pat

I haven't done a ton of seniors, but I've had a few brides (mostly younger) who want to put an image or two on facebook or myspace. I give them a low res image for free with my logo on it and tell them to enjoy (as long as they keep my logo on it). Free advertising and I can control the crop and anything else... That's for LOW res images. High res, I rarely sell/give away for portrait clients.
