Glossy or Antiglare LED on a MacBook Pro?? - 04-07-2008, 04:19 PM

Quick Question...

I'm buying a new MacBook Pro today but I can't decide whether to go with the glossy LED screen or the anitglare LED. Any thoughts??

I have the anti-glare. I recommend it.

I like the anti-glare for the notebooks because your conditions are often out of your control and the glossy screens can be a pain in the butt. I have to glossy screens at home because I like the way they look but I can control whats behind to make sure there is no glare, with my MBP thats not the case.

And don't take that as me saying I'm not happy with my MBP screen, I love it.

Yea I like the idea of the anit-glare but I had a photography teacher show me the glossy and anit-glare side by side and that glossy one looked amazing! Thats why I am leaning towards the glossy. Plus only the glossy comes with the 1900x1200 resolution....

See the only problem I have with the glossy is that...if I edit my photos on my glossy lap top but then moved them to the external Mac display...they are only made in anti-glare, so it will look different. I am hoping though that Apple will come out with external display's like the 23in in the glossy format sometime in the future!

I have a 15" MBP with the glossy LCD and a 23" Cinema Display. With both displays calibrated, I see little difference in my images (as expected). Of course you must view the MBP at the proper angle (as with any notebook). That is why I never perform critical edits on the MBP. YMMV.

Thanks Scott. At least with the LED I wont have to be at the right angle for it...since the lighting is perfect all around it!

Man such hard decisions!

Well I am thinking I will just go with the glossy since that was what I really wanted in the beginning...

No 100% true. ALL notebook displays that I have seen, my 2.4GHz MBP included, will have some measure of gamma and color shift when viewed off axis. The better the display, the smaller the shift, but don't get fooled into thinking that it will be nearly as good as a quality desktop display. The power required to run the backlight and the size/weight needed to get that light across the entire display surface makes it very difficult to do in a notebook.

That said, I still love my MBP, I just don't do critical image review or editing on it. Customers do however, love the rich colors the glossy screen renders.

I have read a couple of different reviews that rate the MBP LED based panel to be the best notebook panel out there for accurate color. They even mention that it beats most typical desktop LCD displays that are sold under $1000. That said, I don't edit on my MBP at all really. I use my PC and multi-displays.

I wish I could find the separate reviews I read... If I find them, I'll post em.

Regardless, of the display you choose, I think you'll be happy.

I used to have the anti-glare, and now have the glossy. The glossy exhibits more of a color shift when viewed slightly off axis.
