Ownership and Property releases - 04-22-2008, 06:32 AM

Hi,

Suppose I have a shot of an aeroplane and I want to use it in a book. I took the shot a few years ago. Since then, the aircraft has been sold to someone else.

Should I be approaching the new owner for the property release? What happens if the guy who owned it at the time moans about it?

Thanks!
Jo

Did you have permission from the owner of the aircraft at the time you took the picture?

For some photos, yes. The example above was so.

For others, no. They would have been taken at airshows or fly-ins, the kind of places where a thousand people are walking around with a camera and the aircraft are all parked up as part of the event. I'm prepared to approach the current owners for permission but this scenario may occur for other aircraft.

Thanks.

I believe if you have the owners permission(release) when you shoot the aircraft, you have the copyright to use that image in any way you see fit. For the others, it might be more intricate as you usually need a release to sell image for profit. The more experienced aviation photographers might be better to answer this question.
