Sales tax rate in Cypress (NW Houston) - 04-23-2008, 09:23 AM

I am about to begin collecting sales taxes and my studio is in Cypress.

I have a feeling the sale tax rate is 6.25%, but wanted to make sure. I do not believe, since I am in Cypress and outside the MTA and Houston, that I need to collect anything for them and in Harris County, the tax is collected via property taxes.

If you are a business owner operating out of Cypress, if you don't mind, can you please share with me the rate you are charging for sale tax? Don't worry, I won't quote you in case I collect the wrong amount, but since the Comptroller's office is slow in responding right now with all the franchise tax stuff going on, I wanted to check here quickly.

Thanks so much,
Pat

Pat,

What city is your business located in? I can find the rate for you if you supply me the City your location is in and the County.

Thanks CJ,

I live and my business is in Cypress, Texas, Harris County. Cypress is an unincorporated city outside of Houston City limits about 5 miles or so NW of Houston.

I live and shop not too far away from you in zip code 77095. Everyone I buy from collects 8.25%.

Pat,

I need to verify this, but I do believe that you must collect 7.25% as you are in Harris County and not in an incorporated city. The additional 1% goes to MTA. This law was changed about a year ago.

I have a contact in the Comptrollers office and I will ask them for sure about this. I am not in Harris county so the Incorporated city gets my additional 2%.

Generally, when you apply for your tax ID, the state, comptroller I think, will supply you with a list of tax rates in your town and if your business travels, the surrounding area. They did for me at least -- but that was 10 years ago. I started a mobile computer repair business way before "Geeks On Call". They will also tell you how often you will need to file: quarterly, bi-annually, yearly, whatever.

Pat,

You must collect and remit 7.25% State Sales Tax. You are outside of any city limits, but within the jurisdiction of the Houston (Harris) County MTA. They get that additional 1% tax being collected. You will probably have a special form that you have to complete with your tax packet the first time you receive your forms.

Thanks so much CJ.

I take it then I only have to remit to one place and that is the State Comptroller's office and not to two separate entities (i.e. the MTA as well). Can you please confirm?

Pat,

You remit to ONE entity - The State Comptroller. They do the distributions.

Ok, I am clear. Thanks to all, especially CJ.

I have actually downloaded the officiel tax rate manual from the Comptroller's website and confirmed the amount, but frankly, it simply isn't very intuitive.
