Looking for Studio Job, Need Tips - 04-25-2008, 12:20 AM

As a result of a lot of thinking and reading through that whole "20 yr old photog w/o job" thread I decided to start looking for a studio job. I started w/ craigslist and it seems to be kind of hit and miss. Then decided I would follow a little piece of advice from Don Barnes.

I logged onto PPA and did the find a photographer search thinking that I would try and seek someone out. No matter what kind of search I did for the Houston area, I was overwhelmed with results (i.e. 200 photographers). I started thinking this is going to take forever to go through and search for a photographer whose style I kind of liked, and that I would be willing to seek out and kindly ask if they needed any help. I guess I just need to bite the bullet and look through all 200 portfolios, unless....... Anyone has a better idea?

Maybe I'm being too picky, but I just want to end up working for someone who I think I could learn a lot from.

You dont have to go through all 200. Start through the list and when you find someone you admire, add them to your list. When you have about 5 photographers, start calling them. If you get no where, start whacking away at the rest of the 200. Be glad there are that many - the odds goes up of you finding someone who is looking to hire help.

How about sending some PMs on here to some established photogs with studios that you are comfortable with? It will take time, but you will probably get a hit. Also, you will probably have to be willing to mop floors and stuff until they see you will consistently show up for work on time.

I offer tutoring services in photography (I am currently tutoring someone starting in the business) and would be glad to tutor you in things, but I charge money for that and most people want the information for free anyway.

I find that if you are willing to read a lot and experiment, you can probably learn all the technical stuff on your own. The business side of things and working with clients is better learned as an apprentice under an established studio.

If you were willing to relocate for the summer, Don Barnes has advertised a need for a summer intern. How can you beat that?
