Questions on framing, matting - 05-01-2008, 04:56 AM

Not sure this is the right place but will start here. Anyone in the Texas area have favorite suppliers of framing, matting, etc. supplies? I live in the Dallas area so would like something locally but would like to here from others around the state.

Also, what are your recommendations for matting and framing? In other words, how much space do you give an 11 x 14 opening on a matt? Do you weight it more toward the bottom or sides? Do you the thicker matt board for a deeper bevel or use the more standard size? Do you frame in wood or metal? Do you use UV glass or acrylic?

Inquiring minds want to know!!

Well, I don't live in Texas but I use www.documents.com for all of my mat/frames. Matted photos are pH Neutral, Bainbridge Papermat in "Fabric White", single-mat. Framed and matted photos are framed in "Matte Black", Nielsen #117 frame. I don't use 11 x 14, instead I use 10 x 15 and fits a standard 16 x 20 frame. I center the photo.

EDIT: One more thing, I buy glass locally.

Hope this helps.

I cut my own mats. Suppliies from Dick Blick Art Supplies. I generally prefer weighted at bottom but I do a lot of centered so they can be reused for either vertical or horizontal. http://www.dickblick.com/

I have tried to cut my own mats but they never come out with good corners. I am using an older mat cut, EZ MAT by Alto. I guess I would need to upgrade to something better but they are costly. Most of the people I have looked at for cutting custom mats are around $25 to $30 per mat. Too much cost for me right now.

What do you use to cut mats with?

Tim, I use a Logan 301 mat cutter. I like it but I should have gotten the 750. If you are interested, get on Hobby Lobby’s email list and watch for a 40% off coupon to make it more affordable. The 40% off comes around every two or three months, sometimes more frequently.

Hobby Lobby? Now there's a thought. Will they cut mat board that you provide for them for free? Guess I will call them and check it out. Thanks.

I always check the paper for their ad anyway for other art supplies. I see the 40% in the paper about every other week. Looks like Hobby Lobby might be a good resource now! Wonder about their frame kits?
