Question Re-prints of really old photos? - 05-03-2008, 11:11 AM

Okay this is tough one.
I just got a call from an old family friend and former client. She is big into geneology and has 100+ photos that she needs reprinted. She DOES NOT have the negatives as they are like 50 or so years old and she doesn't have the time to scan in 100+ photos to an online lab and she asked all the locals (ie: walmart, target, etc) and walmart can do it for $26 a print. She needs 100+ photos REPRINTED into 3 sets for her siblings and her dad as well.
DOES anyone know anyone that can do this and at what price or should I just take the photos, scan them into my hard drive and print them on my online lab myself? I really dont have the time to do that either but I guess if it is for a family friend/client then I must.
She is hoping to get an answer by the middle of the week so anyone could be a big help.
Thanks for taking the time to read this
By the way if it matters she is in Lewisville Area.

This again all comes down to "What is my time worth?" Apparently WalMart knows the value of their time and I don't think that my time has less value. I have all the necessary equipment and even if I hired a student at minimum wage it would take a lot of time to scan and process that many images. I can get a quote for her, but it will be several dollars per image plus a per print price if she wants prints.

Curious, what's wrong with what Walmart offered? 26 cents each to scan and print sounds like a deal to me. Please don't tell me she's looking for a freebie.

If I read the OP correctly it was twenty-six dollars per scan and print.

well she told me on the phone that they told her $26 JUST TO SCAN...no prints involved in that price. she wants 4x6's. she may have gave me the wrong price and it may have been 26 cents (since that sounds more reasonable)

yes please don could i have a quote? i can call and let her know and see how she feels about that price.

thanks for the help guys...keep the "advice" coming

I did a similar job last year for a friend not as many photos around 60, I gave him two options

1. scaned and placed on a DVD(s) 150.00, Based on $25per hour
2. scanned and postwork to each photo 1000.00 dollars again based on $25per hour

Needless to say people are cheap and always want more for less he went with option 1

Oops, I read that wrong. My mistake.

I'm still confused though after reading the original posters last comment.

I'd call back to confirm exactly what it is she is quoting you. If it's 26 cents per scan plus print pricing, it's a deal. Just remember, for this price the job will most likely be performed in an assembly line fashion without extreme attention to color or contrast correction.

Now if it's 26 dollars per image scan, I would expect white glove, eagle eye, professionally trained output on each scan.

Why don't you talk to them further and let us know exactly which it is.

Frank

okay i called and she said they told her $26 DOLLARS a photo

sorry for the confusion. i think what she is saying is that walmart will scan the photos for $26 a photo and then prints are sold at the regular print price that walmart sells them at (15 cents-19 cents for a 4x6 which is what she wants) so $26 for 100+ photos and then an ADDITONAL $0.15-$0.19 cents for each of the 100+ but you have to remember she wants 3 sets so if there is say 100 photos she will want 300 photos.

OUCH!

I've never used them but I pulled them up as the first hit on a Google search request of Photo Scanning Service.

If they don't suit your needs then why not look at other hits that come up in a search for such services.

Good Luck!

If she wants an answer quickly, does that mean she wants the photos quickly as well? This is a time-intensive project that will take even Wal-Mart some time to do.

The only cheap option I forsee is for her to buy a scanner, use the included software and (assuming she has one) sit at her computer for a couple of weeks. Then she can upload them to Wal-Mart and buy prints.

This varies from your original post, but she may consider picking just a handful of them, having them scanned/scan them herself and have those prints made. She can follow up with the rest later. A hundred photos is almost overwhelming.

To answer your question...I am unsure how fast she wants the photos done. She just wanted to get them done or get started on them by the middle of this week and just needed to know an answer
I think my mother is going to do them for $20 a photo and just put them on a DVD for her. If not she said she will just go to Walmart and have them done.

I had this done a while back ago for some pf my old family photos. The only local pro lab in town charged me 1.49 per scan, and 1.19 per 4x6 print. Not sure if that helps, but I hope it does.

Teresa, if this lady is willing to pay $20per photo, my not do them yourself, $2000 dollars, would go along way towards some camera gear.
