Need advice on publishing - 05-08-2008, 12:59 PM

Hi, I recently received an e-mail from an environmental magazine (paid subscription) interested in the possibility of publishing my picture of an eagle I took. Now, how does this work? Do I get paid for the publication? What is the norm on doing this?
Thanks so much, this the first time a paid subscription magazine has been interested in publishing my work.

Here is an example of the shot they want to publish.

You should license the image and be compensated for the specifics the publication wants to use it for.

Do they have a space rate for you to consider? If not, base your license fee on circulation, size and placement in the magazine. Other factors to help determine the license fee are; how unique and valuable is the image to their publication.

Don't give away your work for photo credit!

Hope that helps you to get started in the right direction.

Well, I can see why they'd want the shot. Excellent work.

Another consideration is that you might try to be paid upon acceptance rather than publication. Magazines sometimes work so far out that it might be a year or two before your photo would make it (could also be quicker).

I don't know what the software is, but there is a software that addresses this issue that has been talked about on SportsShooter.com some time ago. You plug in the circulation size and some other features the program asks you for and it spits out the industry standard price. You may or may not get that, but it should give you a ball park to start with if you can find that software.

I've never had use for it, because my photos don't draw that kind of attention, but I would agree I can see why they would want to use the photo that is just a sweet shot!!!

Fotoquote is the software you are referring to.

Magazine Editors normally have a set price especially if its a larger publisher like Source Interlink(formerly primedia). I have ran into smaller mags though that think just beacause they are going to publish you they are doing you a favor and dont expect to pay you. I would ask what there intentions are for the image a one time use, or multi use then quote accordingly. There is nothing wrong with giving a freebie now and then especially if they use your website/name prominet with the picture. Sometimes you can make more off prints than you can ever make from a publication. Just ask them a couple of questions to feel them out, and they should give you a idea of what they are willing to offer. Also try not to make it look like you have never been published find a set price and say thats what publications normally pay you.............. but everything is negotiable lol

Fotoquote is good or sign up for www.Photoshelter.com and they have all the commercial pricing built in and the publisher can order and pay you right on the site. It's very inexpensive. Otherwise Fotoquote is worth the cost.

Don't give the image away, make sure they pay fair market for it's use.

Thanks everyone. This was the response given:

Dear friends,

Thank you for responding.

We shall publish an article about the EPA photo competition, and highlight
winning and some finalist photos, in the coming issue of Al-Bia Wal-Tanmia
(Environment & Development) magazine, circulated in the Middle East region.

We have selected 10 photos. I appreciate if you send me your winning or
finalist photo by email in high resolution.

The photos will be duly credited with your name.

Best regards.

Sounds like they just want it for a journal entry and not for advertising. What does everyone think? Has anyone been in this situation before?

You could be right, however they contacted the US EPA department for this prior to me contacting him.

I am sorry for not comprehending what you posted. You where in a epa contest and they want to do a article on the contest. one last I am sorry and say hey this is a up to you judgment no one can make that decision for you. If you have never been published and would like to see it published go for it just make sure you get in writing its for one time publication and you request 5-10 copies of the magazine
