Why Multiple Bodies are a neccesity... - 05-16-2008, 09:52 PM

If you are doing this for money! Over 30 little girls in the studio getting ready and close to 50 scheduled for the remainder of the day. My Main camera body makes a nice little Ka-Chunk noise when I press the shutter release and this is the photo on the laptop:

Shutter is now in pieces in the camera. Guess this one is heading to CPS come Monday morning.

I finished the rest of the little Dance girls, can complete the other 100 tomorrow and the wedding tomorrow night.

You MUST have backup bodies in this business if you are taking money from clients. It wouldn't have been pretty if I could not have finished the Dance studio today and tomorrow...and I certainly wouldn't be doing them ever again.

What can go wrong, will go wrong!

Thanks for the graphic reminder - if you're getting paid, you must be prepared like a professional.

How come you are sending your camera to child protective services?

No jinx. I use this puppy alot. I am just glad that I have multiple bodies that allow me to continue my work without interruption.

Coby's 110% right. I have a had a camera body fail on me in the middle of a wedding and was glad I had another! Hell, I have (2) backups now.

I've been fortunate to have have anything happen to me (it probably will now ), but after hearing horror stories like this, I always have a 2nd body and like collins, I'll have my 3rd later this summer

I have multiple bodies, though I have never had more than one crash on me at once, I expect that is the next thing I will have to deal with! LOL

This is my newest body too! It was 9 days out of the one year warranty period yesterday when this happened. I am almosts sure Canon will make good on the repair, so I am not really worried about it.

Even if they don't repair it free, this is one of those things so many people forget to include in the pricing of their product and service!!! Equipment cost!

The first time I ever shot a wedding was for the younger sister of a former girlfriend. Halfway thru my camera failed, i was cocky at the time and had left my backup at home (hey that only happens to other people ) fortunantly her oldest brother had the same camera and I just "borrowed" it to finish shooting. I always have a second one now if I'm doing anything important. And maybe one of these days for pay

Three bodies to each wedding. Sold my fourth recently and sometimes regret it. I also carry an IR one - won't be much help - and a P&S JUST IN CASE!

When i first started doing magazine stuff I had my main camera go down, and then my backup got ran over by a idiot in a truck driving over my bag that was on the curb. So I bought a film camera from a pawn shop for 25.00 to finish my weekend shoot

Wow, my worst fear! At the moment, I do carry an extra body with me even though it is an older one but in case of an emergency, it should get the job done. Question for you guys doing this for a while now. When you first stared out in the business how many bodies did you actually carry with you? I honestly can't see someone just starting out being able to afford multiple bodies even if we know it is essential. I get my new 1D MkIII this afternoon so now I should have 3 bodies but it's taken years to accumulate them.

I carry two, and if you are getting payed to do something and your reputation depends on it I dont see how you can afford not to have a backup. Even if its just a d40 or a older rebel that you pick up off of ebay it will make you more money in the long run especially if you are like me and like to mount cameras to moving objects lol

I started with only one body, three lenses, and two film backs, but since they were Hasselblad I wasn't very worried. It was probably two years before I was able to pick up another body. I have even had Hasselblads go down, but it was a lens 60% of the time, or a back 25% of the time. The few times a body went down it was usually an EL or an ELM. The mechanical bodies almost never failed.

I started photograpy out has a hobby with a Canon 20D. And i found TPF a short time after, so when I booked my first solo wedding, I had posted enough posts to know to have a back-up camera that camera was a Canon Rebel 2000 film. I kept it until my 3rd wedding and that was when I got a Rebel XT as a back-up.

That is why I love this forum, if I had not found TPF my learning curve would have been years longer. Everbody here is great with advice....
