Having a Career change - 05-30-2008, 08:32 PM

Hey everyone, I am having a career change. My previous company has laid my entire department off approx 200 people or more. I have been taking photos for years and finally have some college photography courses under my belt and of course need more education with it but, I would like to change my profession to photography. If anyone can assist me in this please let me know, I would like to do tag-a-longs at weddings or possibly concentrate on sports photography. If anyone has any advice or contacts I may be able to speak with please let me know.

I would offer a word of caution here. Make sure that you are ready to make the leap to change professions--after all, your previous employer made this decision for you instead of you making it for yourself.. The thing that worries me about what you said is that you seem a little timid about your capabilities. In your own words, you're asking for any kind of photography work, be it weddings, etc., when your true desire is to be a sports shooter. If you really intend to do this professionally, you're going to need to come up with a business plan really quick!

I don't mean to discourage you- I just wanted to share some thoughts that I had while reading your post.

I agree with your analysis to some degree, I know I am capable. The thing I am hesitant about is my network of friends and colleagues to make it happen. I am ready mentally, I am not ready equipment and contact and work wise. I have approx 3 months to make this happen. I have the drive, I have the time, I have the mental ability to make it happen. If I had a job lined up to constitute paying for the new camera and lenses to make it happen I would do so. I need a little help and critiques to make myself better.
