Printing business cards - 07-17-2008, 07:49 PM

I got some business cards printed today at Staples (mainly because they were fast) and I'm not sure if I like them or not. The card front image is below. I had them made on their glossy card stock because I thought it would make the photo stand out more. In the store when I picked them up they looked good, but when I looked again outside in my car, not so good. When I got home I looked again closer. Under tungsten lights they look great, under flourescant it's just ok and outside in the sun they look terrible because her face has a green tint to it.

Yes, I know that different light sources affect colors but I have never seen this much difference before on any of my other prints. Could it have been caused the glossy card stock? BTW, my original file of this design was in Adobe RGB and it was converted to sRGB for Staples to print.

The colors here look good, so it's up to you whether you're not satisfied with the printed versions. Because a card is something that often introduces you to potential customers, my opinion is that you want it to be the best it can be. And you can't control what type of lighting they'll view it under.

The photo is a nice shot. Just wish her eyes were more open.

It is probably the UV coating on it causing that.

Thanks guys,
Have you seen glossy cards made from anywhere that did not have this color change effect? I am thinking about having them reprinted on standard card stock with a matte finish. If someone looks at these cards in the bright sun I don't think it would be a good first impression of my work.

My cards have a matte finish, and I like how the colors seem to pop out of it.

My parents own an Alphagraphics in Denton.. if you would like I could ask them what could cause something like that with the differences in lighting, and they may be able to offer some suggestions from a printer's perspective. Just PM me.

Did staples tell you to convert to sRGB? I have had problems doing business type printing with pictures, until I started to convert them to CMYK before printing. Once I did that, the problems didn't happen nearly as much. Photos I keep in RGB, but any business documents, I always now convert to CMYK before sending them off.
