Authorization to Photograph - 08-04-2008, 09:14 PM

I'm getting started in photography and I was wondering if you need to get the approval of everyone you photograph? I'm trying to build up my portfolio and didn't want to get into any sticky situations because I put a photo on my website without authorization.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the person is identifiable, you are supposed to have a release. Although its fairly standard (at weddings) to have the release from the B&G only. On any images of children, I always have a release regardless. Its customary to get the model release when they sign the contract for services. Typical usage is portfolio (online and print). Hope that helps a little bit.

I highly recommend joining PPA. With your membership you have access to many forms including contracts and model releases. Good luck!
