Quoting in a book - 08-18-2008, 01:15 PM

Not sure if this is where to post but if someone has an idea of what is legal and whats not or can point me in the general direction of where to look it would be appreciated...

If you are quoting someone in a book...do you have to get permission or just acknowledge they said it..? for instance if i was doing a photo and put a quote under it lets say by thomas jefferson or something...how does that work??

Good question. If you provide for proper attribution, then it is not plagiarism. If you able to contact the individual, without a crystal ball, I would inform them of your intentions. Thus a non-response is implied consent.

I would doubt that is established in law. If someone asks you for permission to use your image, and you do not reply, is that implied consent?

Good point. Reasonable effort has been tried in courts though. That actually cost money. I still think that if proper attribution is given he should be ok.
