Photo's for CD - 08-20-2008, 03:53 PM

I have a client who wants to have his photo's placed on a CD for him use on his web site, brouchoures, and other advertisements. If he chooses to print, I do not want him to be able to print from the CD I will give him. So my questions is, what format should I save the pictures in and should I place my logo on them to visable or translusent? Thank you in advance.

Make them of such low resolution that they cannot be practically printed. Of course, this can backfire (esp. if your logo is on the images): he could print them anyway and then show other people how crummy they look. You'll be guilty by association.

Others may chime in with ideas ...

What is your pricing model?

What type of website are we talking about? Myspace? or professional?

Rich, not sure what his biz model has to do with format.

I would give low res jpegs with watermarks.

It is obvious that he[client] wants to use the images commercially(ie. website advertisements). License out a cd to him for the purpose. That is the reason for the pricing model question.

But formatwise, low-res jpg with a logo watermark should suffice.

Ok so if I charge him a low price then I should give him low res, but if I charge him high dollar then I give him high res?

What I do when I share on CD is resize the images to 800x600 and use a high compression JPG format. In the end, they can make good 4x6 prints and the 8x10's start to show the grain. They are, however, great for viewing on the screen as screen savers or posting to the web as the file sizes tend to be small.

Then again, I am not a professional and I do not play one on TV. :)

Your sale price is not predicated on the cost of the CD. Your price is a reflection of your professional production of custom photographs that will be used by this client to further their business and make them more money.
If you give him a CD that he can use to put the images wherever he wants, you are saying goodbye to him since he doesn't need you any further. That should cost a bunch of money .....

Give him a proof CD with images like below then license out a full res CD of the images he wants to purchase. Since you are parting with your image it will be at a premium price.

I was actually wondering on pricing as well as I have a lot of friends that like to post onto their Myspace pages...was thinking of making a lower resolution CD with my watermark on it but wasn't sure of how to really price something like that...

Why not sell him the high-res version for a hefty sum (estimate how many prints he's making)? If he's using it for business purposes, he should be prepared to pay up...

If not, go with Rich's idea :D

If you don't want a client to use your images for other purposes, first you must make it very clear to them that is your deal. Don't just give them something low res and expect that to take care of the situation.

If you can negotiate a deal, then you both get what you want. If no deal, tell the client you can not provide what they want and you should expect them to move on.
