I'm also considering making them both go the same direction, and would like your opinion.

That's a beautiful image and I think it's a great start. The back side has a lot of words, so you might think about cutting them down. You list some of your services and say "other special occasions," but the other words aren't really occasions (maybe maternity is).

Before having them printed, I'd suggest a couple of quick things to make you look more professional. Not mandatory things, of course, but things that can set you apart from rank beginners.

Look into buying your own domain name through Smug Mug, then your site will actually be whatever you want it to be rather than XXX.smugmug.com (this is something I plan to do to streamline my site). Regardless how you have your site hosted, it would be better to have your domain as your e-mail rather than a g-mail address. Using Blogger for your blog is pretty common and not that big a deal, I think. My site is on Yahoo, and they offer integrated blogging tools such as Movable Type, but for some reason I couldn't get some of the functions (like posting photos) to work reliably so I have a blogspot as well.

Hope that helps!

I would have to agree with Todd, on the Domain Name. It is only 7.95 from SmugMug and they give you a free email to setup.....

I just got a SmugMug Pro account that I am working on, but it's not easy!

I also think the card is too busy,
but once again it is all up to you if you like it or not.....

If the white letters on the card could have some kind of back drop shadow, I think it would make then stand out or POP.
I think that would help the card a bit.

IMO, it still looks good.
I just put Photographer, I think they get the point. Unless you want to stress in certain areas. Once again, it depends on what you like.....

Let us know and see you final draft, if you don't mind.....

later,

Buseinss Cards - 08-24-2008, 12:25 AM

I use many different business cards. They are only one sided and are wallets that I have printed at Pounds and die cut. If I want to talk about portraits I use a portrait card if I am talking about commercial work I use one that is for commercial. I will post an example for your review.

I agree with what has been said about the domains.. plus the text appears to me to be really small. Remember how small a biz card is going to be... put a biz card up to your screen and resize your on screen card until its similar in scale so you can see just how small that text will appear in reality.

Plus the cursive font is very hard to read... at first glance, I didn't even realize they were words.. thought they were just decorative swirls. I only looked a second time because I thought "what's with the decorative swirls?" LOL

I like both the colors (different and eye catching) and the portrait (good portrait, makes moms go "awww")

Another few things to think about - 08-24-2008, 12:54 AM

I would agree with what everyone has already said on the domains, etc...

I don't know where you plan to have them printed, but on most off set and short run presses, green is a had color to get correct and consistent. Most printing presses work with CMYK and not RGB, therefore, to get shades of green you are mixing colors, and they almost always don't come off the press the way you think. I would consider a short run or a color comp if they offer those services since you are using green. Another thing about small time that is reversed (white). It is normally the absence of ink. If you are having to register 2-3 colors your text might start to look "fussy" if they are not precise.

Lastly, in your design, have you accounted for trim and bleed? Extra space that may or may not make it on the card.

I worked for 10 years in newspaper printing as well as other high and low end printing and have see things that look great on screen look bad when the final product is produced.

Just more things to think about.

Thanks for all the advice!
I am currently working on getting a new domain (I didn't know it was so cheap!) But, tmsphotography is already taken, so I am reconsidering my ideas! Any advice on domain names would be great!

Thanks for everything else - I will rework the card and repost for more advice!

Using your own name for your domain wouldn't be bad (it's done all the time), and then visitors have an instant connection to your name and what you do. That would work even with your business name, TMS PHotography.*

*Which I'm guessing is your initials. It makes me think of Texas Motor Speedway, even though that's probably far enough north of you not to really matter.

First of all, thanks for all your adivice.
Here is the new card:
Name: bcfront copy.jpg
Views: 136
Size: 32.2 KB Name: bcback copy.jpg
Views: 135
Size: 44.8 KB

I got my own domain and email - thanks for all the help on that. As you can see I went with my name.

I also fixed the wording and changed the layout and font.

I did leave the script at the bottom because I like it.

As for the green - I will just have to see how that prints.

Please let me know what you think of the changes!

I like it!

And as for the green, even if the printed version differs from what we see here, if it's something you like it's all good.

I would watch the Lifestyle designator in the photography type. Some folks consider swinging and other alternate relationships as being 'Lifestyle'. Again as Brad said, the print may be small when sized to card size and the vertical orientation may make your text too small to read without a magnifying glass.

Yea.. "lifestyle" photography is an industry term that isn't generally known outside our industry.

I like the new card much better and it was also a good decision to go with your name as the website URL.
