Sell or license - 09-03-2008, 01:43 PM

I shot some images a local band is interested in for their album cover. I have been looking through releases and can't decide if I should sell the images outright along with the rights to them or just license them for use on their album cover and accompanying material/packaging. Anyone have any experience with such things or know what the conventional wisdom is regarding the use of images on albums? Either way, I only plan to collect once and not make them pay royalties on each unit sold. I am curious about anyone else's experience.

Always license unless they offer you enough money that you will never be unhappy if they become the next "Beatles" or whoever and you can't license the image to People Magazine for serious money.

If you license, you can reuse.

p.s., you did get a model release from everyone in the band, didn't you?

The shots are not of the band. They are of a model I contacted with the idea of shooting for their cover. I will be securing a release from her today. We are trading out another shoot she needs in lieu of payment. Odd, I know, and I even offered her part of what I am charging for the images, but that is what she wanted.
