I've never seen that site.
I just threw up a little.

No offense to the OP, this isn't directed at you.

I find it pretty sad.

It's the same as having 102 photographers come and photograph your wedding with all rights released and paying the 'winner' $300.

And revisions too...

OMG!
There's a contest for a full page ad going in a mag that the ad rate is almost $20,000 for. And they're running a contest to have someone design it for $111.

That's right, $20k just for the space.
Guess they didn't have any money left to hire a designer.

I think it's a pretty innovative idea. For a logo design, the minimum price is $100 which is pretty standard and goes up from there, so it's not like they're undercutting. The designer gets to choose if they want to put in the effort or not, so it's not like they're completely committed at any time.

I understand your analogy, Ted, but I don't think it really fits here.... As a matter of fact, when I had my logo done for my cigar blog, I went to one company, and they pretty much did the same thing. They had a number of their designers do up their interpretation of my idea, and then I chose which one to work with. I then worked with that designer to get what I wanted... All for $100. So, to me...it's a decent idea that definitely gets them some business.

$100 is "pretty standard" for logo design much the same way that $10 is the going rate for a family portrait. Sure you can get it done for that, but You do get what you pay for. Clearly.

No offense 12stones, but both analogies fit quite well...

I would never do a logo for $100. I'm graphic designer by trade and I charge a minimum of $500 for logo design. That being said though I offer multiple options and allow for revisions according to what the client wants. Doing a free for all and having all these people scrambling for the "prize" kind of hurts me as a designer(I'm still starting out and haven't done a whole lot of freelance yet).

It really is the same as those "photographers" that undercut on wedding photography, selling the disc of digital negatives for $1000 or less. You really do get what you pay for, graphic design is exactly the same way. Unfortunately everyone who knows how to open Illustrator or Photoshop think that they can design.

I'm not trying to bash Jodie in any way, but I completely agree with Ted. I'm not going to pretend I'm a great photographer (it's a hobby, not my career) and I don't like it when people claim to be designers and they're just using every filter and effect known to man in Photoshop.

Equipment doesn't make a photographer, and software doesn't make a designer.

I'll get off my soapbox now

No need to get off of it. It's opened my eyes a bit, because when I was looking for logo design before, the packages I found in abundance by regular logo companies who do a lot of logo design were from $100 - 300. This was with revisions, etc. So, coming from my limited knowledge of the area, the OP was really within what I considered an average price range due to what I'd found before. And I wasn't looking at one of these free-for-all kind of design sites...

Yeah, I know I thought photographers were kind of pricey, but now that I understand the expenses and the time that goes into it, the price most people charge seems quite fair. I think this goes for a lot of the more "artistic" fields, and a lot of people just think that because you like your job you should be willing to do it for less pay (or free) because it's something you like to do.

Just because you enjoy doing photography, or graphic design or whatever doesn't mean you aren't working hard at it. It's still work and it takes a lot of time and effort to put out a good product/service, it just helps make it more palatable when you enjoy the work you are doing.

Sorry for thread-jacking, just thinking out loud here.

I think you chose a great design and I will definately give them a shot if I ever decide to get a logo.

It is really a shame that some of you would knock the artists that submitted work to her because some of it is very good work. You really don't know the situation they are in or the people who use the service, especially not enough to comment on their work or education level.

Some of the logos were good (I like the one she picked actually), but many were not. I just really don't like these kind of sites. You don't get the personalized attention of one designer working on YOUR logo. Granted that designer might have other work going on, but they are going to be much more focused on your logo design than these kind of free-for-all type sites.

Just my opinion.

And what did those artists, in those 'situations' get for their work?
Nice try kid, better luck next time. Thanks for putting all that time into it.
