Rap CD Cover - How to charge? - 11-25-2008, 11:53 AM

I've been ask to shoot a RAP cd cover for a model's rapper husband.

I've not done a CD cover shoot before so I'm not sure how to charge.

I have hourly rates for events but I don't know how to apply that to this.

I'm guessing there will be no prints, just images on a CD for him to use however he chooses.

I'm also fairly certain that this will be a low budget kind of deal.

Any suggestions appreciated. I did a search here but could not find anything definitive.

First question I'd ask is "how much is your budget?"
If they come back with $25 you'll know what direction they are going.
If they come back with "we don't have any idea" I'd quote them my day rate and say that it is negotiable. If they pass out after hearing your day rate, start negotiating when they regain consciessness.

Guy at bar " hi good lookin, would you sleep with me for a million dollars?"
Girl at bar " for a million? yes I would"
Guy at bar " how about for ten dollars ?"
Girl at bar " ten bucks? what kind of girl do you think I am?"
guy at bar " we've established that, now we're just negotiating the price !"

Thanks Tom, good advice and very funny.

I'm thinking that I'm going to pass on this one after thinking more about it.

It could be fun but it also could be more trouble than it's worth. Knowing my luck I will pass and then this guy will sell a billion CDs.

At a minimum, I would charge a day rate. Establish what that is both time wise and monetarily. For example. A day rate for me is 8 hours with one hour for lunch. $2400.

Now that they know how much coverage they need, they next need to decide how they want the final product delivered. My guess is that they need a digital file on disc with unlimited reproduction rights.

If they print 1,000,000 copies of your photo, and you only charged them $25, how are you going to feel about that?

I would set a price per quantity. For the first 100,000 copies of the imge is X amount. Each 100,000 after that they would repay a different amount.

YOU RETAIN THE COPYRIGHT. Your client gets reproduction rights.

Not sure about pricing but Aric makes sense. You're probably way ahead on this but make sure there is a written contract and make sure you get photo credits on the CD credits, on the cover photo if you can.
