VERY discounted price? - 11-29-2008, 05:09 PM

I just shot the Chuy's parade today and met a lot of people who were interested in some of the photographs I took and some even in having other work done. My normal practice with this type of thing has been to act like a dad with a good camera and get everyone a CD of all of the shots that I took. Well, I might still do that but I am thinking that most of them are only going to be interested in shots of their child and might actually prefer online fulfillment of actual prints (maybe digital as well). So I was thinking about offering that through my normal SmugMug site. But I haven't done "sports" work previously and thought about offering a very discounted rate for these prints.

I see it 2 ways. The first way is that I was going to be there anyway taking pictures of my son. Any money I get out of the deal is bonus and offering the small download for a buck would be a good marketing tool. The downside to that is the potential that this group of potential clients comes to expect that sort of pricing.

Thoughts? Experiences?

If you are satisfied with the quality, you should charge accordingly. I consider "I was going to be there anyway", to be a cop out.

Don't screw yourself or any other photographer by being cheap. Charge a fair price. Earn some $$ for equipment and be thankful. I you undercut yourself then they will expect it from you and other photographers. NOW go get a tax id and start paying taxes!
