Selling cd's? - 01-04-2009, 07:18 PM

ok I shoot for a soccer team and they are a competive soccer team in the Plano soccer association.
my question is should I sell cd's with images good enough for 8x10 print or is that a bad idea? and if so how should I price it I was thinking of what i would charge what I would for an 8x10 print for each image on disc.

thoughts feedback please.
am I just shooting myself in the foot by offering cd's and not going with just print sales?

thanks
Mike C

As long as you are getting enough money for it I don't see a problem, but you need to price it so your sales average would be equal or higher to what you are getting now, if everyone chose the CD over ordering prints.

I photograph a few day cares and preschools. My packages are $19.00, $29.00, $39.00, & $49.00. I would like to get about a $35.00 average so I offer a CD for $39.00. If they buy my $49.00 package they get the CD for free.

I have done it both ways. Until this past baseball season I have sold CD's in full resolution (only for my son's team mates) and usually made $300-$400 per season. This year I decided that I would sell prints. I made a price list with 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 and sports posters. Made cards with my web address and passwords to hand out to each of the parents. Even brought my laptop to a few of the games so the parents could browse the photos and make an order in person.

I sold exactly $0 worth of prints this year. and received comments such as " $4 for a 4x6!? wow that is expensive"

Thankfully this is a hobby for me and the only thing that the money pays for is more photography toys. So I didn't get too bothered by it other than the fact I took the time to take pictures which sometimes resulted in me missing a play by my son
