Wow so I just talked to a computer friend of mine, I was asking him why I keep finding clients pictures on their Myspace accounts. I couldn't figure out how to steal my pictures since I have the right click disabled. He tells me all you have to do is click the picture and drag it onto your desk top. HOLY CRAP! I just stole and printed a 8x10 picture off my site! The colors suck but the quality isn't too bad. So double Crap, they are going to be printing off pictures, with crappy colors and telling people I took them! YAAA LOL
So how do we/I protect myself? My computer guy said a Flash album but I don't think I can offer Paypal cart with a flash album?
Any tips?

You can't. Screengrabbers (there's one built into Windows - use the Prnt Scrn button) will capture anything, even if it's in a Flash gallery.

The only way to 100% protect yourself is to not post them online.

Exactly.
OR put a big ol' fugly overlay watermark.
Way easy to take any image you see on the net. No way to prevent.

BTW: There are plenty of flash based shopping carts available. Regardless, a print screen or a screen cap app will still get the images.

That's why so many are projection selling. They never go on the i'net until after the sale. And, many are considering offering i'net versions after they purchase a certain limit. Some even make the high rez available after another limit has been reached.
Of course, some don't offer any of that. We report. You decide.

Flash wont protect you - like he said - prt scrn button on your computer gets around that. And what Peter said. Totally no online nuthin no more for us. Our clients also like to see that we have added them to our gallery after they finished buying - its an honor rather than a necessity. I actually just got a gushing letter from a client that she knows how selective we are with what images go on our site and she was so thrilled I chose THREE shot of her. Nice little side perk.

So You guys knew about that little trick!? No one was surprised?
So with screen print they wouldn't be able to print very big I wouldn't think?
I love the idea of projecting but I am probably 18months -2 years away from that concept....I'm not excited about having these people into my home for a projection movie. Much less the tools it would take for it.
So Until then, I am going to look into this template for Lightroom that uses flash and paypal
...or maybe I can start doing contact sheets.
I really like the idea of them sending their friends to my website to see their pictures. I feel like it generates more word of mouth.
How do you do it if your not projecting? What sort of Flash Carts do ya'll use?

It is even worse. Alt+PrintScreen saves the picture in the temporary cache, then you can paste it in PhotoShop or whatever and uprez it or modify colors or anything.
My rule is NEVER post a high rezolution version of anything on the net. 800 pixels max. Good luck getting decent quality above 4x6" with that.

Let's talk about AlGore's invention. There was a study (by PPA) done not too long ago which stated a rate at which pictures lose their value for every day they were away from the studio (had to do with proofs). And it is magnified by the web. Think about it. The gramps and grandmas lookieloo at the photos(ya, pumkins, they are "internet positive", just ask any doctor about WebMD) . That's enuff for them. Who else? So, how many 'ya gunna sell...

I am pretty lucky... I deal in digital medium for the most part...not prints that often. Nothing goes online until after the customer has their files. My money is made upfront and not on prints. For those that rely on print sales, I would do much like suggested above and only put a handful up online...in a blog or something.

Can someone break pixels down barney style to me. Ovimo said 800 px max but the 8x10 pic I just printed was only 630px?

No big surprise. Two solutions,
1 - Re-price your package so you don't have to sell prints.
2 - Watermark your proof, put on a flash-based gallery. This only deters them by making things a bit harder for them to steal, and remove your watermark before printing.
I know a lot of people don't like selling their negatives, but I don't have time to deal with prints & all that stealing troubles so I add the extra cost and give them a CD/DVD with permission to print.

Here's a thumb-nail. What come's out of the camera is the true pixel count (camera raw, of course). They are measured in pixels and should be compared to pixels per inch inside the camera on the sensor. But then you blow it up...and all H breaks loose. How many of those pixels finally make it to the image you print? And did they have to encounter any compression/conversion along the way? This a subject for higher powers, but for now, the more you reconvert, the farther you depart from what was recorded by the sensor.

If you cannot do projected proofing, then you can do paper proofs. Still better than online proofing. We used to put ours in an image box in mats. It was a nice big thing to look at and felt more substantial than holding a few small prints. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
