Photographer's Assistant in DFW area? - 01-29-2009, 11:27 AM

I was wondering how to go about becoming a PA. I dont really what field, though sports would be cool. I would just like to get some experience working with people that shoot professionally. I've got quite a bit of photography experience, but none on a professional level. I talked to the director of photography at the TCC NE campus when i was asking about going to school there, and he said that there are more photography studios right here in dallas than almost anywhere in the US, and that it should be an easy deal getting in to do SOMETHING in a studio even if its sweeping floors.

If you could use a hand every now and then or have any tips to help me out please let me know! Thanks in advance for any info. I'd really like to grow as a photographer and would love to see great shooters at-work. Thanks again!

Brad

I would attend all local Pro meetings. ASMP, MPP, DPPA and NPPA. We like to see new people wanting to join and
participate. Good luck

Cool. I'll google all of those and see what info I can get. Sounds like a cool deal. I'm looking at joining one of the camera clubs around here too so I can try and meet some new people in the photog world.

Brad
If you want to been seen as a budding professional you need to look into having a web site, or at the least, a photographer blog.
I wouldn't hire you without seeing your work ahead of time. I don't have time for interviewing. If you don't have a body of work to show, start putting one together. There are lots of thread on this forum that will help. Search TFCD, look at the seminars, are you on the second shooter list ?

Thanks Tom. I'll have to look at the blogs of some of the people on here to see what exactly they consist of and what people blog about as far as photography goes. I have signed up for a smugmug account but havent done anything with it yet. Not sure if that really consists of being a "website" though. Im definitely keeping my eyes open for workshops and that type of thing that come through the area. I already attended a Tamron workshop back in November and learned a lot from it. I would love to find some more. Not sure what the second shooter list is, or where its located. Im going to guess its a sticky on here somewhere though. ill have to search it out.

Im not looking to second shoot, although i would love to do that as well. Im mostly looking for a behind the scenes look into the professional photography business, to help me learn and grow. Id like to help out as far as setting up, post processing, etc...

Thanks again for the info though Tom, ill definitely look into all of these options as well.

Brad
