If the point is a loss of business to the pros, yes, it affects you pros. People think they can shoot like a pro with an expensive camera, so they try. The problem is, are they comparing a pro shot to one they did? Is the potential customer comparing them? No. So you suffer a loss of at least one job, potentially more.
For a young couple I know who wouldn't otherwise have had "real" wedding photos, I shot their wedding. It was practice for me and a gift to them. Yes, I could PS the images, I had a camera and lenses many pros could have used. Was mine as good as I've seen here - no way!
Photo organizations that the pros are members of because they are pros should be advertising this to the public. Sure consumers should get out there and shoot, but these organizations should emphasize there is a difference in the eye of the pro photographer just as the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The pros eye generally makes the beholder happier.
Are camera manufacturers to blame? Partly. They want to sell cameras of all shapes and sizes. It is the free market society and supply and demand. But again, someone needs to make the public realize there is a difference between the newbie with a camera, and a seasoned pro who has samples of their work. |
