Cap & Gowns? - 02-03-2009, 11:16 PM

It's been a while since I graduated high school.... and the school did the graduation pictures, it's just how it was done. The rich folks went over to Olan Mills Studio for their 'portraits'.... the rest of us just did the school thing.

So - seniors seem to be calling... and one of the moms asked about cap and gown photo.

I don't have a cap and gown..

It wasn't something I was planning on offering, but if it's a normal part of doing seniors, no biggie.

Do those of you who do seniors, do those photos, or does the school do them?
Seriously though - to use up one of your sets on a stupid photo with your cap & gown on, versus with you and your guitar, or on your horse...

Maybe it's just me... but I thought I'd get some input. And if you DO the cap & gown... where do you get yours from... do you just get a variety of colors???

;-)

Thanks!

I just include the Cap and Gown in the set.... Every MOM needs a Cap and Gown! I alway sell a 8 x 10 separately from the others in the Set!

Thanks for the quick response. I'll hit the GW tomorrow and see what I can find.

I used to do C&G on almost every session. Now it is down to less than 25% and those are because mom insisted. I bought mine from Jostens. The ones that photograph well are not cheap. You might just get black in a size large for those that ask.

Yeah, I was looking at that last night. There were LOTS of poly/shiny ones. And the schools that I'm doing, their yearbooks: shiny ones as well. So would you do the black one - even though the different schools have different colors for graduation?

If you will only use it three or four times a year I think a high quality black only should be fine. I had six or seven different colors in two sizes, but then I was photographing over 200 seniors per year.

If you are going to photograph seniors, you need a high quality cap and gown in the school colors for the schools you expect to have kids from. The cheap c&g's the kids wear for graduation look cheap. Good ones are quite pricey, but it is your reputation you are presenting.

Thanks Howard. I'm going to order ones that I'll be able to use more than a year or two.

I get mine from Herff-Jones....they are local here. They are the ones that supply all of the caps and gowns to most of the schools around here. They also carry lots of accessories that can be included in the photoshoots. And, they make tassels that have a little bit bigger of a year on them so that the year can be seen better in photographs. They also have the fake diplomas for the seniors to hold, honor roll cords, sashes, etc. if you need them too.
