Archiving Photos / Remote Server? - 02-09-2009, 11:15 PM

Just wondering if any of you are using a remote server or online storage space?
I archive my images to DVD as well as an external hardrive, but that really doesn't do me any good if my place burned down since I keep both here.

Any recommendations?

remote server storage is really the safest, but don't assume they've got multiple location backups. Ask.

I haven't gone that route yet but still do optical disk backup but with multiple locations: one set at home and one set at work, 30 miles away. I also have backups on external portable (2.5") hard disk drives but these are more for convenience than safety.

I just signed up with BackBlaze, it's $5 month for off-site storage, you can download or request a DVD/USB Drive of your files. So far so good, it hasn't slowed down my comp.

BackBlaze isn't the first of it's kind by any means, I just like it because its very keep-it-simple-stupid. Here's a good site that weighs the pro's and con's of BackBlaze. I'm PC - but they do have a Mac beta.

Apple Blog - BackBlaze Review

Also - I'm not storing everything I have offsite. I keep a few essential program files, and raw file + jpgs of keepers only. To back up all 120 gb I have right now would be crazy. Which makes me think, I should probably do some spring cleaning soon.

So I looked into BackBlaze, and it's really not made for archiving gigs of information, really as the name implies and a backup of what's currently on your computer.

I would like to have a remote location that I can use as an offsite archiving center rather than just using external hard drives that are kept in the same location.

Any other sites you would recommend?

I'm not a fan of those online backup systems. They don't mention obviously anywhere on their sites that it's not really a true back up because once it's off your computer the files are GONE in 30 days. I learned that the hard way.

I just bought a drobo. I have 4 1 terabyte drives. Sadly enough they're already half full! Haha! I started transferring files when I got it. I had a ton of WD suck as$ hard drives. Three dead in the last four years. Not cool.

I've found most long term places are EXTREMELY expensive. (when you have the kind of data amounts that I have) I'm in the process of reading about this service. I haven't had much time to really get into it... but it might be a good option for me and maybe you!

http://mozy.com/

It's pretty cheap for personal use. For business use it's a lot more.....

There is also Amzazon S3 (not cheap, again)
http://aws.amazon.com/s3/

If all you want to back up are TIF and Jpeg files then smugmug or zenfolio are also a viable option for dirt cheap.

There is also DreamHost who will not only host your website but allow rsyncing 50GB of backup data with their hosting plan ($0.10 per GB per month over 50GB)

FWIW I use a Raid5 NAS that I sync to an external USB drive every week that I keep at my office and I pay no storage fee.

I just started using Carbonite.com there is a free trial it is very simple and gives you unlimited storage for $50 a year. PC magazine recommends them and it seams very user friendly. I also used external hard drives no problem with them, but if there was a fire im SOL.
