It is there. You are the complete hypocrite. But you only point the finger at everyone else, demonstrating what we have already seen. You have added nothing but to call names and derail the discussion. You had zero useful information to add to the discussion.

I'm not calling the people trying to help me a fool. I am calling you a fool. You didn't come on to help - you only came on this thread to be an ass - which you promptly accomplished.

I fully support contests even though I am not personally using them because it gives a chance to let the creative juices flow and change things up a little. I know I appreciate in my job the opportunity to just get something and have fun doing it - whatever it is.

Just like the contests that Abel runs on here. They get you to do something a little bit different. No one calls him a hypocrite for running those little contests with little or no reward, do they? He isn't watering down the industry, is he?

Thomas,
You'd be surprised how many folks that are creative in one aspect don't take things into account from a graphic design standpoint. I see it all the time.

At the end of the day, I can only politely point out the ethical and business aspects as I personally see them. If you disagree, that's certainly OK. If you have a high comfort level in your approach, which it sounds like you do, Go for it. You'll probably find someone. If both of you are happy from a business and ethical standpoint great. I can't argue with that.

A lot of us, designers as well as photographers however prefer it the way I explained. Our preference is to not have to do business through contests, or spec work. We think it's a better way of doing business and ultimately leads to a better product. So, everyone can make up their own minds and we're all happy! Now then... we're all looking forward to your new design.

I appreciate your viewpoint and your ability to express it in a professional manner without getting nasty or rude.

I don't think there is an ethical problem with a contest or spec work.

I also don't think that type of stuff affects me that much as a photographer. I know that people that would go for the spec work or the free/couple hundred dollar photographer isn't hurting me because they don't see the value in what I do nor was I ever a consideration because of that. If I have the opportunity to educate on why there is more value for a professional with experience to shoot their wedding, maybe I get a sale. But most likely, someone that is going to spend $100 on a photographer on Craigslist isn't going to hire me for $3000, even if they know there is a huge difference. I don't think there is an ethical problem with the guy who shoots weddings for $100 compared to those of us who shoot them for thousands and the buy as always has to beware.

Oh, I know, I wasn't trying to rip you. Just thought it was well written, humorous.

I agree with your comment "don't see the value in what I do". Boy, isn't that the truth? I can't tell you how many people want a logo for like $100.

For the sake of this thread, I am thinking about using the designer I hired AND running a contest and seeing what comes of it all.

Hello Kettle, meet Black.

Ok I wasn't going to waste my time but since I'm sitting here getting paid to do nothing I might as well do something.

Let's break this down shall we?
I made one simple post making a blanket statement about posts I've seen here in the past, and agreeing with Texkam. Sure his wording is more polite, but he's saying the exact same thing. Furthermore, no where are you called out specifically. Honestly, I couldn't even understand what you were asking for in your first post.
Here's my post again...

I've had this conversation before and now I just roll my eyes at these threads because obviously it doesn't do any good to argue.

Some here do know the benefit of actually hiring a GOOD graphic designer and I applaud you.
Now the part I highlighted in red could have been taken by you as a compliment if you believed you were letting good quality designers design your logo but instead you are obviously admitting to NOT hiring a good graphic designer.

Now here is where the thread gets ugly as you start to get nasty, obviously offended.

Call someone a hypocrite for just arguing the point, yet you use non-navigatable simpleviewer for your own website. You are the hypocrite. I guess you didn't see the need to find a web developer that could really understand you, develop concepts for your vision and build a relationship with them.

Get off your high horse.
Nice way to go digging through my website looking for faults and insulting it yet yours is just a plain old smugmug site that everyone and their grandmother has. I have one too, but only use it for personal stuff.
This was also where you assumed something, and you were dead wrong.

And some more name calling by you...

Nice. And sure.... defend my industry and I'm the ass.

Then you go on to call me a hypocrite, when you have yet to show anything that I have done to deserve that title. I also don't know what contests from Abel you are talking about or why you would even bring him up. You seem to be hiding behind the word "contest" because in your mind that's ok. And if you are ok with it, fine by me. Have at it and good luck with your logo... the first impression of you... your brand. However it turns out, I'm sure it will be a perfect fit for you.

The thread got ugly as soon as you posted in it.

If you have suggestions as to designers to use, things to look for when choosing a designer or ideas for branding, please feel free to share. I won't be the last person looking for this.

Maybe you missed this:
