How much extra to fly? - 03-09-2009, 12:43 PM

I might have an opportunity to do a shoot for an architecture firm (small, just two people) that I've done work for in the past. Except this time it would require flying to florida to do the shoot.
So besides the obvious costs like flights, food and transportation... would you charge any additional fees over your normal local photography fee? I could most likely do it in one day so no hotel would be needed unless I wanted to stay on my own accord.

I would at least budget one night in a hotel. By the time you wake up, go to airport, go thought security (with camera gear), fly, do the shoot, and then repeat the first part; you are looking at a 15+hour day...if you do not mind that, go for it. But i would fly in the night before so you can be fresh for the shoot, then fly out after it.

I would budget for a one-day. Charge them for two days of shooting, instead of cramming it all into one day. Fly in, shoot, sleep. Fly out.

The actual shoot is probably a 2 hour shoot. Maybe 2.5 hrs.
And I like to shoot the exteriors in the late afternoon so that's why I was figuring fly down in the morning, shoot and then catch a late flight back. But I guess I'll think about staying over. Thought about doing it anyway and heading to a beach or something the next day.

But if a normal local shoot was 2-3 hours, are you saying to go ahead and charge at least a full day rate for this one since I have to account for my travel time?

Absolutely. You are spending a full day+some time on the job.

Calculate time packing/flying/shooting/staying/flying and that is time that you can't spend on other jobs or with your family. They are booking about 24 hours of your time, so charge them accordingly.

That's exactly how I felt, but wasn't sure if it should translate like that. Honestly I wouldn't want to bother otherwise.
Thank you, sirs!

Yep, you should charge a daily rate since it ate your whole day. Personally, Im with you on the fly in and out in the same day. I do that too.

Thanks for chiming in, Holly!

I went ahead and let them know the deal.
I highly doubt they will want to pay me that much but ya never know.
I hate flying anyway so either way is fine with me.

Thanks to all those who commented. If I hear anything positive I'll report back.

When I travel, I have two rates. My day rate while I am working, and my day rate while I am traveling. You should be siting on that plane earning money. Because you are on the plane, you are not doing jobs that would be earning you money.
