Question Is This A Scam?? - 04-09-2009, 09:46 AM

I am selling my Oly 330 on CL (craigslist). The first day I had it out there I got an email asking

Hi,
Would like to know how long you have been using this item and hope it still in good condition my # you can reach me any time 702-------
(well he gave the entire number).

I responded and even called the number. The number belonged to a realtor office.

I then got an email today with this:

Thanks for your response..,
I will make payment through cashier check.
...So i will offer you $550.00 for the auction to be ended.
Get back to me with your full name, address, phone number so that the payment can be send out to your address as soon as possible....
As for the shipping, i will be responsible for the shipping to destination. Upon Approval of payment...
Thanks And Best Regards

he is willing to pay $50 MORE than asking price...which I dont mind but it seems a little sketchy to me.
What do you think?

Sounds like a scam. Be careful about cashier checks and money orders, there have been MANY scams involving fakes. If you do accept it, don't ship anything until the money order/cashier check/personal check clears the bank.

SCAM...stay away.

Anytime someone offers you more money than what you are asking for, they are playing on your sense of greed. The cashiers check will be bogus and you will be out your equipment. Unless you specifically tell the buyer you will hold shipping until the check clears both banks, I would stay away.

Often the scammer has you wire back any overage. So you lose out on the items sold and shipped, you lose what was wired, and if you spend any of that cashier's check, you'll lose that that when the bank reverses it. Plus, you'll probably get a fee for the reversal of the deposit. Often these checks are from distant banks and take a longer time to clear, than your bank will hold it. That means it will be available to you before anyone knows it was bogus. But your bank will collect from you.

Scam.

The scammer even forgot to customize the e-mail for Craigslist ... which isn't an "auction" like eBay.

Teresa,

If you do get an email back from him...and he wants to procced to send you the money...I would have it sent to your work...and I would take the check to the bank it is drawn agaist...and cash it there...you will probably have to pay a fee...but you will know if it is real or fake....

Like everyone else says..don't ship till it clears...

I sold a D70 and two lenses on CL. I had about a 3:1 ratio of scam artists to real people. It's the price of doing business.
