how compatible is it with Canon lenses? I'm thinking about a 200 f/2.8 and if it will work with the lens that would give me a 400 f/5.6 if my thinking is correct.

You are correct and it should work fine with your canon lenses as far as I know. But I have only used it with my Sigma 70-200 2.8
