SOLD FS: Canon 70-200 f4 - 01-03-2005, 05:24 PM

Canon 70-200 f4 with everything, including box and manual. Clean, no nicks on paint, no scratches on glass. Looks and works like new. Hood has some light marks. Before I list this for sale somewhere else I would like to try to sell in Houston. If you are interested, let me know and I'll meet you so you can try before you buy. Will post pictures soon.

Without shipping, $480. I am not set up for PayPal so I would prefer another method of payment but if that's what it takes to sell this, I'll set up an account.

Greg

I am considering the lens but am a bit concerned about the f/4 vs f/2.8. Is the lens fast enough for indoor basketball ?

Thanks

I have not used this lens indoor but here is a post from someone who has:

http://www.lifeatf8.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=583

If you did use a f/4 lens for basketball you would have to use a very high ISO which would also require incorporating noise reduction into your workflow (like Noise Ninja or Neat Image.)

Finally, the pictures above were taken of a college basketball team. If you will be shooting high school your lighting may not be as good. In all honesty, a f/2.8 lens would probably be a better choice for you. If you are in Houston, I would be happy to let you try it out for a game to help you decide.

Let me know,
Greg

Thanks Greg for the response. The pics you linked look very good IMO. (also pretty neat what the noise reduction software can do) You bring up a good point about the hs gym lighting vs college, though. Unfortunately I'm in the Dallas area, but do appreciate your offer.

pwell (and others!),

Its not that I don't want to sell this lens, really I do. I'm just not sure its a great lens for what you want, but it is a great lens (light weight, sharp at f4, breathtaking at f8, works great with a 1.4X TC.) Its an "L" lens and "L" lenses are "L" lenses for a reason. If you rent one or borrow one and decide this lens works for you (or want that daytime football, baseball, softball, soccer lens,) let me know. Otherwise, you'll find the right lens for you.

Have fun,
Greg

How about if I drop the price to $470? Sorry I haven't posted pictures yet but Adam can tell you how nice it is, he used for a little while at the zoo.

Wow, $470 is a great price for a lens of that quality. I have both Canon and Nikon gear and recently purchased a used 80-200 f/2.8, and paid almost double what you're asking (because I needed the extra speed). I'm leaning towards going exclusively Nikon but I wish they had some of the quality f4 glass like the Canon 17-40 and 70-200.

I am very tempted, though I already have this range covered with a 75-300 IS. Will you be at the model shoot on Sunday so I can try it?

I'm planning on being there. If not, we can work out another time for you to try it.

Oh, it's yours! - 02-14-2005, 09:22 PM

I want a lens like this for shooting animals, at the dog park, zoo, etc. It's a must have before I go to the San Diego Zoo and Wildlife Park. I hope 200mm is long enough. I don't think I could hold anything more! Since I just bought the 28-135 I wasn't planning on buying this one so soon. But I wasn't expecting something like this to come up. I need to think on it, but I bet someone else is going to beat me to it!

If 200mm is not long enough you can use it with a 1.4X extender. I used mine with the Sigma model and it worked great. Let me know if you want to see pictures taken at 280mm.

suzy...when shooting at the zoo i would definitely recommend using a tripod. i use both my tripod and my cable release when shooting to minimize camera movement...

i thin thats the best way to go... it may be a bit of a pain to lug around but the photos will be worth it.
