if you're not thinking about compatibility with full frame bodies in the future:
Canon 10-22mm | | | |

for decades the SLR was a film camera that produced a negative (or positive/slide) that was 35mm wide.
Today's digital SLR's have a sensor instead of film. The sensors are not the same size as 35mm SLR sensors (with a couple of exceptions like the 5D, and are referred to as "full frame").
Since the digital sensors are smaller than 35mm, the image that is captured, when printed at a comparable size appears to have been taken from a closer perspective, or from a "longer" lens.
In the case of the Canon 20D this equates to an "crop factor" of 1.6.
In short, a photo taken with a 20D digital SLR and a 50mm lens and printed full frame, will be the same as a 35mm camera and an 80mm lens taken from the same spot. 50 X 1.6 = 80
To us old timers, a wide angle on a 35mm camera was something 35mm or shorter.
In digital terms that would be 20mm or shorter. 20 X 1.6 = 32

i understand. I was looking at sample pics for the lens you suggested and they seemed too wide, but then again, maybe they weren't taken with the 20D. Maybe they were "full frame" | | | |

If you want a cheap but acceptable lens, there's always the Canon EFS 18-55 lens that came with the 20D when bought as a kit.
I have one laying around here somewhere that I'll sell for $50.
I've replaced it with the SIgma 18-50 mentioned above - better quality glass. I am also looking to get the Canon 10-22 soon, as every time I borrow one, it seems to be the main lens on my camera.

I also have the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and I've been happy with it.
