John, if this is a one-time deal, have you thought about renting what you need this weekend? LightTec in Houston should have plenty of choices for strobes, umbrellas, stands, etc. and would be very reasonable for a weekend project. Heck, you can even rent a light meter and pocket wizards while you are at it. There may be other rental places in Houston as well - LightTec is the only one I'm familiar with because I rent from them in Dallas.

PS - you may also need the little adapter that fits on your hotshoe, if you are shooting with a Rebel.

If you end up with Alien Bee lights, I'm selling a lot of nice Softboxes at reduced prices.

It will depend on what you are renting. Without looking at the price list (i.e., off the top of my head), stands are probably in the $10 range each, monoblocks maybe $20 each, umbrella maybe $5, softbox $10-20 range, pocket wizards $15-20.......

In all, you might spend $60 + bucks for the weekend, BUT, you'll get much higher quality lights than just bargain basement ones. Basically, I'd view it as an opportunity to try something out without pressure to buy without really knowing what you want.

I hate to see people buy really inexpensive lights to start and then find they are unhappy with them. Alien Bees makes some good monoblocks, very affordable, but you are looking at $225 or so for the least expensive one, plus stand, plus all the extras.

Check LightTec's website or call them. Hopefully, someone in Houston may have some other options for you.
